Fastback Standard Tyres
Fastback Standard Tyres
The current tyres on my Fastback are 165 R 15 but I will be replacing them before it gets back on the road. The question is new tyres will be something like 165/60/R15 So what should I be looking for to replace these older tyres?

The original tyres would have been 6.00/15 bias ply (cross ply), the modern equivalent is 165/80/15.
Your 165SR15 is 165/82/15, so you're running the closest size.
You can still buy Michelin XZX in 165SR15.

Re: Fastback Standard Tyres
I've tried Toyo 165/80/R15 but I wouldn't recommend them- very noisy
I'm now on Nexen 165/80/R15 which are lovely to drive on

Re: Fastback Standard Tyres
I have a set of 4 continental contact tyres for sale for £200 if of interest. They’re basically brand new - 2 years old, covered less than 200 miles. Cost me double that. I’m based in surrey.
They are 165/80/R15 87T

After the “ Body Off “ Resto. of our 1972 Type 3 Automatic Variant I was going to fit 5 New Vredestein 165 x 15 Sprint +. However our Tyre man suggested 165 x 15 Tyres may be difficult to source in the future and recommended 185 65 15 as the nearest size that would be likely to remain available for longer. Did us a good deal on 5 Michelin 185 65 15, which look good on my non standard 5.5” Wide Steel Rims. Unfortunately the Wider Tyre and Wheel combination does not fit in the Spare Wheel Well, so I had to change back to the 165 15 Vredestein Sprint + on the Spare Wheel. It’s still a very tight fit in the Spare Wheel Well. Maybe only because of the 5.5” Wheel ?
Officially 185 65 15 Tyres are only permissible on Rims of minimum Width 5” (Maximum Width 6.5”)

Thanks for that Steve. I am planning on fitting 5.5" Empis when I get the body back on and all the other bits fixed. So I should be looking for 185 65 15 tyres?

It depends what you are after, if you want originality you want Firestone F560s. But these have been out of production in our size for a long time, so you have to get new old stock as and where you can find them. And that then leads to the question of old rubber loosing its properties and being less grippy, especially in the wet.
if you want as close as you can get size wise 165 80 15s are your best bet these days at a reasonable price. If you want a vintage looking tread, then I highly recommend speaking to the guys at longstone tyres, I buy from them a couple of times a year for work and they know their onions.

Re: Fastback Standard Tyres
Camskill Tyres List 165 80 15 in Avon but at £128.50 ! Vredestein Sprint Classic £122.90 ! Then they go down into the £60 odd bracket with Nankang, Continental CT22 at £61.20. Radar. Toyo £55.95. Maxis. All the way down to Vredestein T Trac at only £41.60 ! They unfortunately have a modern Tread Pattern but are a good Tyre. The Vredestein Sprint + was a good Tyre with a Classic looking Tread and reasonably priced but the dropped it in favour of the Sprint Classic at a very high price. They still do the Vredestein Snow Classic in 165 80 15 and 155 80 15 which have a Classic looking Winter Tread but are both up there in the £112 - £119 price range. I have a Set of 5 in 155 80 15 on our 1966 Beetle but they were only about £40 each when I bought them.
