73’ fastback

Post by Aaronslimvw » 26th July 2020 - 12:23am

Hey, I have been lurking on here fore a couple of years now so decided to make a bit of a thread.
My car is a 1973 fastback that was imported from California in 2016. I later bought the car and carried out a full spruce up to the underside/suspension components. From what i can tell all the paint is original on the car and has covered about 85k from new. hit a few shows last year and won couple of trophies. Will probably not be to everyone’s taste but any comments or suggestions/questions welcome.

Sooo I’l start from when i picked up the car.. saw the car on a classic car website after looking for months for either a square, a 412 or an early bug.. It looked clean and original, so took the plunge and went to view the car. Took the car transporter as its a fair trek to swindon from north Wales, and didn’t want to make the trip twice!

The couple who had the car imported 911’s For a living, and had got the fasty in a deal with a 911. They were purchased from an 83 year old gentleman who Had given up his license due to failing eyesight.

I instantly fell in love with the lines of the car and although there was some minor work to be done to the floor pan and the engine ran like sh*t we made a deal and the car came home to wales.

Was over the moon with the car. Has loads of paperwork and service history and the original booklets that came with the car AND the original bill of sale!
The work could now begin to get the fasty through a uk mot and registered for uk roads. The brakes needed a little attention, and a small bit of welding was needed on the pan. At one point the f.i had been ditched For carbs. So they were serviced along with the usual engine service bits. She was running sweet after a good tune up so gave her a good clean and off we went for n mot.

Now the parts collecting could begin. I knew from the get go what i wanted to do with the car so i started by getting a 4” limebug beam with air shocks, and a set of 17x8.5 and 17x9 bbs rs wheels in 5x114 fitment. Along with a weld in Rear bag set up from evaresto and double bellow bags.

During the winter months the car was taken apart and new parts fitted-
Air ride switches and gauges in a home made enclosure, and front beam. Frame horns trimmed and formed around the bottom of the new beam.

The wheels were split and narrowed to 6.5x17 and 8.5x17
Front blank discs were purchased and drilled to suit the wheels and converted to a stud and nut configuration. Rear hubs and drums got the same treatment.

Anyway.. the car was tinkered with to the last hour before leaving for its maiden voyage (After modifications) to the ultimate dubs show where she picked up the sponsors choice award. Made all the work worth it.

love the fasty - nice to see the car lowered on BBS rims (properly). I am going to fit a set of American Racing Torque Thrusts to my square and need to fit type 1 beam and narrow the rear arms - all to get the right offset.
Car looks properly solid and pretty standard - nice job
hows the air ride using the car with family inside? - comfy ish...

Thanks!! The bbs will probably not be to everyones taste on here 😂. They are VERY close on the inside and outside on the rear.. some steel has been cut away on the inside Amd the wings have been rolled for them to fit. Air ride is great with the fam on board very comfortable and the gaz adjustable shocks still give you enough stiffness for decent handling. Would stay clear of the monroe style airshock for the front as i think they are inadequate for the type3. Have already bought upgraded limebug ones for mine but yet to fit them.

i love this! :) Is it Marina Blue? did you have to tub the front arches to allow enough movement lock to lock?

Hey! Yes its marina bleu. No haven't tubbed the front inner wings as it gets decent lock currently (rubs on full). I fitted narrower barrels to the front wheels to help with this. the fronts are 6.5j with skinny 5” barrels.

We done AAron, saw it at UD this year. That's my mate Paul giving you the trophy :)

I'm on the Wirral not far from you so hope to see you around once this Covid lark is over !

I got 7.5's wide wheels on mine and thought I did well! Always thought I could squeeze 8's on, but 8.5's respect!

Sick! Yea I’m in Nefyn/Porthmadog so not too far. Hope to see you at some shows probably next year now. They really shouldn’t fit 😂 as i say some trimming of the bumpstop on the shock tower has been done and the wings have been rolled. No rubbing at all and they tuck hard on full drop so i’m happy.

Im in the middle of trying to sort out photo roating out. Hopefully ill sort it soon or you.
