Hmm, sounds a bit like a FWD car that is on the ramp in full droop with gears engaged. The angle for the CV is excessive and it locks / releases as it rotates. That or the diff locking up / releasing.

Does it bang / make noises when freewheeling ?

Not sure, hasn't been driven enough to find out.
Hopefully it will all be sorted tomorrow.

Update: gearbox has been left for a full strip and rebuild, but no fault has been admitted.

The transmission is back in the car, just needs to be fitted now.

You had me confused for a moment there, until the picture appeared.

Is there any diagnosis shared ?

Replacement fulcrum plates and side gears apparently.
No fault admitted, but only charged me £40.

I didn't know what they were so had to go searching on Samba. There's a few threads on there - seen this ?

Yes, spent a few hours trawling through the Samba looking for similar issues.
I'm not au fait with swing axle transmissions, to be honest they're a pain in the ass. Much prefer IRS where you can remove the gearbox without leaving the vehicle immobile.

My knowledge is pretty poor in that area too.

At the risk of being a numpty...... why is there an "L" for left on the right hand brake disc ?

I presume it was marked by the rebuilder before disassembly.

So it was worth marking as being from the left but not worth reassembling in that same position.

I'm sure it's fine, just a bit strange and confusing for me

Hopefully this might force a bit more fluid to the rear calipers and get rid of my soft brake pedal.

If that's a CSP master cylinder I hope you get better joy than I did.

3 master cylinders later, I had to get my money back and fit a porsche 924 master cylinder (Which worked a treat and brakes are awesome).

All the CSP master cylinders that were sent to me weeped out of every orifice. See my build thread. It put me back nearly 8 months.

Hope yours is ok. fingers crossed.

Yes, I did read your thread. Was hoping that CSP had sorted the issue by now.
I’ve already got a 944 master cylinder fitted, but can’t get adequate pressure to the rear calipers. The brakes work, but the pedal’s soft.

Fingers crossed for you

My pedal is pretty hard and brakes are good. Not had it MOT’d so don’t know what the rear brakes are going to be like, seems fine on the road though. Mines a 944 cylinder not a 924.

I wonder why your 944 cylinder is no good if it’s designed for rear disc brakes?

No idea.
The pedal’s soft with the rear discs, but rock hard with rear drums.

Isn't that to do with the volume of brake fluid being displaced?

More volume in disc calipers so less movement ???

Yes, I would think so. That's why I'm hoping the larger volume CSP master cylinder will work.
If not, I'll be running a separate solid brake line from the master cylinder to each rear caliper.

You were right to be concerned @937carrera, note the position of the calipers and carriers in relation to the gearbox in the previous and following pics.

Image

New master cylinder fitted as well, and the brakes are much better, just need the new discs and pads to bed in.
After the test drive

And back home in the storm under it's own power.
Really need to connect the heat exchanger cables.....

Just one small issue to sort, the brake pedal pushrod needs to be backed off as the brakes were binding, and the higher 4th and final drive really do need a bigger engine.

Oh crikey, so he did build it backwards then!? at least you seem to be winning now. Nice to have it back on the road?

The new bearing caps and carrier mounts were refitted 90 degrees out, and at opposite ends.
20 minutes and it was sorted.

Once the weather has improved I'll dry the car out, readjust the brake pushrod and put some miles on it before I decide what I'm going to do.
Although most of that will be done in 3rd gear.

Just a quick question for anybody reading this.
Is there any reason why since refitting the engine and gearbox it sits about 10mm higher? The air filters are higher than the decklid now.

Is it possible to fit the engine bar upside down ? (seen that on an ARB)

Spacers missing ?

It's a swing axle car, so the gearbox is secured to the frame horns by the same gearbox bracket, and the same number of spacers used at the rear engine mount.
