1971 fastback back from the dead

So I bought this car as an attempt to justify whether a business could be set up with the business model being to buy a car, restore it and then sell on for a decent profit. Although I quickly discovered this was not the case with type 3's due to the amount of man hours that need to be put in but hey ho here are some pics so every one can see how I have been getting on :)

At this point the majority of the rust has been removed from the body and panels and I plan to have a new floor pan fabricated by the end of new week using beetle repair panels. all hints and tips welcome.

Beetle repair panels are not a good match for the Type 3, but the cost of new floorpan halves would make your eyes water, and the delay would be frustrating too. There is no doubt they are the 'way to go' if you can afford the wait and cost, but if not, a bit of ingenuity can achieve almost anything.

this is very true I could not belive the price of them when I eventually found some and as only the front qauters of the floor need replacing I have knoked up a pair from bug repair panels for less than a quarter of the price and a whole day of chopin and welding :) I think they turned out okay

:D What a way to start though. In at the deep end - anything else will be a piece of cake. Like the repairs. By the way are they the original sills or replacements. I seem to remember years ago an older car had a similar profile but as I get older the brain gets dimmer.

you can say that again best way to learn in my opinion :) haven't used any replacement panels just fabricated everything from sheet steel other than the floors where I used bug pans for a head start :) haven't been online for ages tho so hear are the more up to date pictures

great job on the floor pans! I wish I fitted new pans to mine now but like said above, it's money and a long wait and my pans were in reasonable condition to not take the plunge..

I thought that might be the case any one who has FB feel free to add jezza wise profile pic is a red bug

yer not really worth the effort if the originals can be saved but as you saw mine were way to far gone for patches

yer I was quite pleased with them there not any where near as good as when it rolled out of the factory but sure beats scraping your toes on the road :P

right so who approves of this? and can any one confirm weather its an original VW one? supposed to be clementine orange (L20D) but for some reason it looks a bit modern for a 70s colour. Not sure if the pictures do it justice but im pretty pleased with my first bit of 'proper' painting in a tarp and tape tent haha

you're doing a great job and there's some nice fabrication work going on there! I made all the rear panels for my Fastback myself as well. there just isn't any repair panels out there unless you pay silly money for nos ones.

Well, if you think of a clementine (little orange) that's what the colour looked like originally. The photos seem too red, but that depends on monitors and camera to show correctly anyway. It's paler than the brilliant orange commonly seen on campers.

We were brightly painted back then, unlike the sombre greys and ubiquitous silver that's around now.

couldn't agree more its almost like modern cars a specifically designed to be dull haha
and thanks certainly took a fair while to get the home-made panels looking/fitting right but there was no way my budget
would allow any panels to be bought in so no choice really :)

Looking at the first photos in the thread, that's certainly Clementine, particularly clear in the one in the garage, where the light is on the front panel, and the scuttle photo.

yer defiantly was! is a whole lot brighter now I ordered l20d and got that :S but im very happy with it! best way I can think to describe it is burnt orange :P
