Looks pretty cool dont it :!:

I know vw did prototype a type3 convertable but i'm sure they never made it to production. I dont know enough to say if this would be one of the prototypes or a custom made effort. Def looks good tho. 8)

i seen a prototype in a vw book i got i dont think its that 1 n i think it sed in my book it wont b going in2 production. it dont look like theres a proper roof mech for it n if there is its hidden well. i rekon he cut the top off the notch it used 2 b n tidyed it up by stickin that cover over the back seats.

i wouldn't of thought that empi 8s would look dat good on a t3 tho!

They did make one prototype convertable type three but it never went into production, I think they thought it wouldn't be that popular.
The prototype is in the vw museum in Germany i do believe.

At least two were built - there's one at Wolfsburg, another in the Karmann museum. I've heard that something like 6 were constructed - pretty normal to evaluate a new model thoroughly - it only got axed at a fairly late stage, with brochures printed and circulated, as well as info in workshop manuals I believe.

It's not even a 1962 model - VIN is 31518018 which makes it a 1965.

The 'hood' is a travesty too!

The reinforcement needed to stop the flexing of the body-shell was unsightly and considerable. Shame - it would have looked very pretty (they do!).

You're being a bit harsh, Brian - I'd say you've lost weight since the 2006 Invasion.

BTW when I spoke of the reinforcement needed for the Cabrio being unsightly, I was referring to the VW originals, not that particular re-creation, which I didn't get to see unfortunately.

As far as I know, there are no prototypes on the road, be interesting to see one in the museum though!

Mine is currently off the road after some idiot drove in to the back of it, but is undergoing lots of work ready for the summer hopefully!

It probably wasn't going very fast - there's not a lot to stop it - and no bumpers to spread the load either. You're lucky as the normal thing is for there to be a big crease in front of the engine compartment where the rear has been pushed under.
