411 LE, parts to be saved, act quickly

Post by 937carrera » 18th June 2020 - 9:31pm

Today I went along to Matthewsons (Bangers & Cash) to collect the 411LE variant that was recently offered.

Here are some pictures

I think this is far beyond saving, unless you are particularly skilled and ambitious, you can see the absence of a front inner wing. the front mounts for the trailing arms are also hanging free due to rust, hence the somewhat excessive amount of toe in.

So, I think the best thing is to save what can be reused and then allow the remainder to go to that great scrapyard in the sky

I do have a storage problem, so suggestions need to come in quickly, I'll then strip off what is possible

Let me know either:

Things you think are difficult to get hold of that may be in good condition, even if you don't have a current need
Things that you would like to have now........... prices will be cheap

Front calipers are already removed
Engine and box are the obvious target....... though I am unsure how I am going to do that as I really don't fancy getting underneath and am quite reluctant to even put it on a ramp, clutch is siezed
Tailgate looks good, but there are no keys and the boot is locked
There are two bonnets, the original I think and the one that is fitted that used to be orange
Interior - after a clean I think the seats etc will be in quite decent condition, doorcards warped so perhaps not so good

I would like to get this cleared by the end of the month if possible

Hi David good find, I’m guessing the obvious stuff would be light clusters they look reasonable, clocks switches wiper arms wouldn’t take up a lot of room. At this point I would say I’m interested but not desperate. Far better these parts went to someone who is mid build I would be wanting them for my stash.

Hi David, I'd be interested in the front and rear impact strips if they're still intact. Front ball joints and inner (bent) tie-rod ends in any condition. I imagine the floors are gone but if there are any reasonable cuts, including rear engine bay, anything underneath or roof/gutter, I'd be very interested in those too. Thanks.

Hi again David. Other things spring to mind, I need a head liner, rear hatch hinge covers, door rubbers and sun visors. The rear view mirror too if it's all in good condition. I've nearly finished stripping my scrappy 412 and I'm dreaming of repairing the shell - this the cuts request - and putting it back on the road. I notice the gutters look good. I need an engine too at some point. May need another storage unit or to build a new shed! Where abouts are you? Perhaps I could collect a job lot?

I was thinking that you might want to come and cut the pieces off yourself.

Gutters and roof actually seem to be decent, the rust is mainly at the front and lower edges.

I'm in North Yorkshire (see sig) and you ?

Yes, I can do that. I'm in the Midlands but I always enjoy a trip to North Yorkshire. Perhaps we could talk to arrange a visit?

Yeh Danny I did, I just put your request against those bits and didn't reply, sorry

I have tried all my other keys but cannot get the boot open yet, time to remove a doorlock to get the code I think

Door lock removed, the keycode is VB xxxx. (code removed, key now sourced)

I don't suppose anyone has a spare key I could borrow, or have you get one cut from your master ?

Hi David, I'd be interested in the window winder mechanisms, a passenger door mirror if there's one lurking inside (I can see there's not one in the photos), and the fuel filler pipe if it's solid (very unlikely given the condition of the inner wing!). Maybe the glovebox too - I'll need to check the condition of my spare one.

Right, I have added those requests to my list.

I don't remember even seeing a fuel filler pipe, the rubber boot was pretty much disintegrated but I'll check

Nice to see so many type 4 members popping up for this rare opportunity

I’ve mentioned this in a PM. But here’s a photo of my under dash airbox. I could do with the part you can see and the metalwork that goes underneath. Mine is a right hash!

A key has been sourced for the tailgate and it, together with the engine cover, is now open to the world for the first time in 39 years

Are the engine mountings any good? I mean the ones that the rear carrier bar slots into at either side.
And you said the clutch was seized, but now that you have access to the slave cylinder, is it any use?

Engine mountings were in a similar condition to the front bumper mountings. Almost nothing left of the bolts, lots of rust and in the end I just used a cutting disc to slice through the remains of what was there.

No idea on the slave, I didn't even separate the box and engine, but I'll probably just put leave that on the box as a spare, just in case what I have for the 412 saloon is no good

The sized clutch may have been nothing more that a seized pedal, but I haven't got to those yet.

Turret tops are in great condition..... shame there's corrosion within 30cm of a prescribed area as far as an MOT man would be concerned :)

Pretty much the usual for the engine mountings then. No worries about the slave cylinder - I was just thinking about a spare. That inner wing is worse than on my scrap one. (Reminds me of a Type 3 Variant I once bought for spares - and still have bits of - I reckoned its windscreen would pass the MoT, but it would fail on everything else.)
Still hoping the window winders are usable though.

Not got there yet, front suspension is nearly off, after that it's finishing the engine compartment and then it'll be the interior.

The window winder handles are solid at the moment, but i know well enough not to try and force them. Door cards off and then we'll see.

I was hoping to get a petrol flap release cable out of this but the ally housing is broken. Nice rust free petrol flap though.

Richtbiscuits and I spent the day doing some 411 parts saving.

She's getting smaller and very little is left on the car now. We even took the cutting disc to the front end to save that as a body cut because much of it was in good condition.

Front suspension is off petrol tank removed, dashboard, pedal box and interior are out

One piece is still putting up some resistance. Just one of the 4 countersunk allen head bolts for the tailgate has released its grip. I hope to get in touch with people over the next week about the parts requests they have made. The car will be around for another week or so I think, with quite a lot of body cuts being taken to help Richtbiscuits progress his project.

I now have two 411 bonnets in good condition, somewhat of a rarity these days.

Here's an update picture, a bit blurred I know, apologies

The workshop floor is a rusty mess :)

That spare wheel well looks surprisingly good. I could be interested in it, along with the boot floor back to the bulkhead, if Richt doesn't need it.

OK, I don't think Richt needs either which would be great news. I was getting a bit conscious about the balance of the car, I don't want to chop the front off and have the thing go vertical on me :)

Window winders are off and awaiting a long bath in some oil Do you want the handles too ?

On the drivers side one of the captive nuts broke, but that's easily repairable

Thanks - I'd be pleased to have that as the well in my 411 could be mistaken for your inner wing. When I said the bulkhead I meant the one in front of the petrol tank, so it's just the lower boot floor I'm after (to the weld with the vertical, or just above), not the bit above the tank. Hopefully that won't unbalance it too much.

Good news about the window winders. I should have plenty handles in stock already.
