Column mounted wiper switch

Post by kaddy » 28th May 2025 - 9:47pm

I cant seem to get a supplier for a new wiper control switch. My own is a hi/lo switch that is only working on high. I suspect the low speed contacts are worn. Has any one had any success in repairing the worn contacts with solder. Thanks.

Not in a position to check, but is it a type 3 part number? My car has the dash mounted rather than stalk, so I'm not familiar. But beetle ones are readily available. Maybe you could modify one of those?

Thanks, but your link connects to part number 111-953-519/GR which may or not be different from your reference of 111 953 519 E, I dont know. And i see no mention of its suitability for a Type 3. I have contacted heritage to see if its suitable. Thanks.

The difference will be the markings on the stalk or similar.

Heritage say their 111-953-519/GR is suitable for a 2 speed motor. Just waiting for them to confirm Type 3 's are a compatible vehicle.

Wiper switch off and it seems to be a SWF wiper switch brand with no part number visible at all. I have seen SWF wiper switches on Autodoc so it may be a cheaper alternative to VW. Plus they seem well constructed too and fairly robust. Ill check it out

I am reliably informed that SWF is the original equipment supplier for the switch for my type 3

"Bow,Bow" thankyou.
And due to the exorbitant cost, I am going down the 2 speed dash mounted switch route like the earlier typ 3's. Rotary 3 speed switch allows.

1. Low speed
2. High speed.
3. Electric washer.

But leaving the existing non working stalk for aesthetics

According to Dave Halls ( I think ? )

https://vwtype3and4club.org.uk/partswap.php

Wash/wipe switch and valve 8/71>; use T1 8/71>12/73 8/71>; use T1 same year

Does this not fit ?

Justkampers dont list it as compatible, so returning hassle is too much. I been there before, lost parts, lost money ect. Mind is made up now going to replace with a dash mounted 3 point rotary switch.

Why Electric Washers ? Stick with Original Air Operated.

Because my existing wiper/wash switch does not work correctly. The correct replacement is too expensive, and along with irish customs and duties, its mega expensive. So converting to electric/2 speed is the least expensive and i get to keep my kidneys.

You can modify the dash mounted switch to make it electric wash as well. I did it with mine.

The compatabilty list that We have is very reliable- it was compiled back in the day by Dave & others, from parts catalogues and physical visits to auto factors, as well as trial and error on the actual cars
Jk , Heritage etc are only in it these days to make money & their staff arent always as acknowledgable as you'd hope
So, at £40 for that part, I'd say its a no-brainer
Its worth a little effort to check with Irish Customs, what the threshold for paying import duties from UK is?- In UK, importing from EU, the threshold is £135, which is how I'm able to buy most of the parts I need from Germany & france- as long as I keep it under £135, I don't have to pay Duty, & VAT in EU is the same as UK, Maybe theres a reciprocal arrangement from UK to Eire?
If Your Son were willing to bring a Tank home for you, I'd rather just give you this FI one I've got, rather than see you pay £125 for that one which looks knackered before you start- It's RHD, FI & of no use to me without modification, but I'm not posting it, so Your son would need a day trip to Bath

I would not have any interest in the tank that was suggested to me as it looks worse than my own. Its a rusty item thats only waiting to leak. As for the £40 wiper switch, thats ok, but when you start totting up vat, duties, ect If its not the correct one, then i am into losing money straight away, thats why i am keen to get the correct part numbered one at the start. I have no reason to doubt Daves lists, and a part number would have clarified a lot for me , but there isn't one.
Irish customs have a tendency to demand a figure for items, you pay, and dispute any charges after in the hope of getting a refund. Its not as simple as people may think. There is no set tarriffs on items like you would expect, its all abit hit and miss. Thats why alot of vw parts business that took place pre brexit, has now reduced significantly. The lack of a proper irish system of customs has a lot to answer for.
