Wiring Diagram Type 3

Post by Type1234 » 23rd March 2024 - 2:59pm

Hi Folks, does anyone have or know where I can find an individual/single wiring diagram for the starter system and one for the charging system suitable for my 72 fastback ?

Cheers
Don

The wiring in my car is a bit of a shambles (explosion in a spaghetti factory) and the wires shown on the wiring diagram are not always the same colour as the ones in my car. I was trying to get back to basics. Ignition to starter, how many cables, which colour and size Etc.

Ahhh ok, I forget the age of your car but............ Ill reference original colours for ease, hopefuly this helps, ignition is a black wire that runs from the coil + (there are 2 maybe 3 wires from there. One to the diagnostic plug if still fitted, one to the reverse light swtich and one to the fuse panel. It doesnt run through a fuel, the terminal next to it is bridged, and this wire run from the fuse panel to the ignition switch, also black. looks like 2.5mm sq

Starter wise, you will find solid red, and red with a white stripe. Much larger 6mm sq and 4mm sq. Another 25mm sq goes from the battery, through the floor pan to the starter held on with a 13mm nut. There will be as many as 3 otherwires, 2 are for diagnostics and can be ignored. The 1 you want pushes on to a spade terminal near the 13mm nut, it then goes through the floor and runs under the carpet all the way up the bulk head, changing to solid red from red white or black. to the back of the key.

Ive attached a 1971 diagram, the stalk marked D, is the ignition barrel.

Another issue I have related to the wiring is, my car has been fitted with an alternator so, no control box and it has electronic ignition so, I'm sure there will be redundant wires kicking round, which adds to the confusion.

Electronic ignition just adds a wire from the coil to the distributor. Removing the regulator doesnt change much, if it was done properly. most of the wires are still used.
