Can anyone advise what the hole with the grommet next to the fuel line is for?

Thanks

Thanks for the quick response. I'm not speaking about the square'ish hole under the fuel line I mean the small hole approx 15mm dia next to the fuel line.

Ok thanks. That would make sense. I might use it to put my brake line from the master cylinder to the rear wheels through.

You should already have a hole for that lower down. Under the seam between the two halves of the too hat.

Photo of the lower frame head and I can see where the brake pipe is coming through but as you will see there is a series of holes which have now all been repaired. I had thought the unscrupulous previous owner had just shoved the brake pipe through one of these rotten areas. I will need to find a new route for the brake pipe.

That's roughly where the hole should be. If you look inside the car in the passenger footwell near to the tunnel you will see where it should enter the car. I would advise against running it through the hole you are thinking as that's inside the tunnel. This will mean you have to make a hole at the other end for it to come out of. You have no way of securing/supporting it inside there. And material it's made from is prone to cracking as a result of vibration. You also have other levers and cables in there which could damage it, and my final thought is you can't inspect it to make sure its still in good condition year after year. Redrilliing the original hole and following the original routing down the edge of the floor pan inside the car is route VW chose.

Thank you for that. The pipe is still there and appears to be in good condition and I have it cleaned up and located along the passenger side of the tunnel, outside the tunnel. There is a space next to the tunnel on the inner side of the frame head so I can route it through there and make a new hole roughly where it should be. With the hellish state of this car it's hard to tell where everything should be. Thank you very much for your help.

No problem. It's nice to help.and keep these cars going. There are rubber grommets for each end of the tube. I'll look them up for you tomorrow.

There is a rubber grommet at the rear where it comes out to the T piece and oddly it looks like the rear end is in pretty reasonable condition. I may need to replace the brake pipes to the rear drums but that shouldn't be a problem. I have the brake pipe material and a flaring kit.
