Early Squareback
Early Squareback
I have been offered the possible opportunity to get an early squareback.
Just waiting on pictures before viewing, and checked out ISP for parts if needed.
Body panels are available but expensive, not to mention outrageous shipping charges.
300 euro wing is costing 975 euro shipping, the customs and vat on top.
So the only financially viable option is to repair if possible, before replacing.
Question is does it make sense to launch into another piece by piece resto
for a 65 squareback..I??

Re: Early Squareback
Is it just wings you're going to need?
Quick holiday on the mainland & drive home with new wings

Re: Early Squareback
If its just wings then happy days
But realistically its probably going to be more, and thats not really an issue
if it does not need to be a full body off job.
Whats going to be a major bonus is it has been kept in a dry shed with other collectibles for
over 20 years. So fingers crossed until I get more pics.
It was in use and engine trouble forced it into the shed all those years ago

Why not put a teaser up?
Re: Early Squareback
Just received both engine number and chassis numbers.
After checking them both it appears dates put it at approx August 66, which would have been
the end of the production year, which coincides with its current irish reg of 67.
And off to see it in the flesh tomorrow, 3 hour drive. But you would drive 6 hours to see a type 3 squareback

Re: Early Squareback
Production years run from 1st August to 31st July, so a build date of August 1966 would be a 1967 Model Year.
Re: Early Squareback
Correct.
Re: Early Squareback
It gets better.
This really is the classic barnfind to the letter.
I went to see it today to give it the once over. At first glance its scruffy looking,
but underneath its a diamond. I could find no where on the heater channels, under seat at the floor area,
a posts, b posts, windscreen edges.
Even deep under the dash to look up at the air box vents, that needs welding.
I pulled up carpets at the front bulkhead, along the heater channels, and in the front boot area, and found only grubby looking
solid metal.
And there is a reason why, its not been exposed to outside weather for 50 years, thats right since 1970 since it was tucked up in the shed.
Its a little beauty, that I drove 3 hours to see, and 4 hours home again. best journey I ever took. All the documents filled in and transferred,
and making arrangem, ents now for collection by a vehicle recovery guy.
Dont you just love it when a plan comes together.
Oh and another gem, it was on the road for 3 years, and then confined to the shed....And its only done 34000 miles. Thankyou god.

Re: Early Squareback
So in anticipation of the arrival of my new treasure , I have decided to make a list
I know I will need little in the way of mechanical stuff, and I do have boxes of new stuff
gathered over the years.
But I would need a source for good quality replacement carpets and head lining.
I know I could make either with the industrial sewing machine I have,
and use the existing as templates. But I am curious to know whats out there, and how expensive.
Any advice would be most welcome as always.

I do not see an e mail address for them, and phoning is out of the question, as I am only on
as mobile with no fixed landline. Pity as their stuff looks great

Me too, its getting delivered early next week, after 50 years in a shed...magic
Re: Early Squareback
Why does that mean you cant phone them? Most mobile providers in the EU do not charge any extra for calls made to other EU contries. Im with EE, for less than £30 a month ive got a decent phone. Unlimited calls, Unlimted texts and 30GB of data A month to use anywhere in the EU. It only gets expensive outside of that. Mobiles as usually cheaper than landline these days.
34000 miles in 3 years was a lot of miles back then!

Nobody around here is going to be in the slightest bit jealous
On the phone, if your contract does not include international calls (making international is different to roaming calls home) then is there a way you can get a three or giffgaff Uk PAYG sim card and use roaming to make the calls. With those providers, the credit will not expire so long as you use the sim every 180 days.

Re: Early Squareback
Phoning land lines from a mobile pay as you go in Ireland would require the sale of both my kidneys.
Its bloody expensive to call an Irish landline from an Irish mobile, let alone uk.
Maybe if I was on billpay I might get a suitable package. But I am not a person that uses my phone excessively,
so pay as you go with all calls to irish mobile numbers suits me.
No doubt 34000 was more miles than normal back then, but vw engines well maintained could do that easily.
Its because they would run for ages firing and on 3 cylinders that the farmers here loved them.
This car was owned by VW Leasing in Ireland at the time, and spent 3 years on the road, and then into a shed
makes this car unusual. It also makes the solid metal and parts from that era possibly more valuable as a braker than a whole car.
And thats what I was afraid of, that it would be bought, and flipped or broken. Thankfully that did not happen. I bought the car
on the photos because I knew it would end up back on the road if I had it. I gave it a quick onceover on the important parts to me.
I did not really want a body off resto, if that was avoidable. But realistically, that old,
it was astronger possibility, than not.
But my inspections of all the usual suspects revealed no welding required. Needless to say, I was stunned.
I lay down across both front seats to look upwards towards the airbox grill area, in my quest for extensive corrosion.
Result, nowt. Not a glimmer. All door posts, under the back seat, inside the boot area. Back seats look unused, as do the rear area.
When i get the car, i will post up a full group of photos showing the usual suspect areas.
All in all agreat day, and great result

Anyone who breaks a car that good would deserve to be broken for spares themselves. Could be a way of getting your replacement kidneys though...

Re: Early Squareback
Agreed, now it will see the road, in the one car, instead of lots.
Parts wise it would be worth more money than i paid.
But complete as a car, its worth more to me
