Miles not clocking up!

Post by kinga » 23rd July 2020 - 11:56pm

Hi all,
Went out in my 68 fasty today and noticed that the speedo is working fine, but the miles aren't moving, on both the odometer and the trip recorder.
Any suggestions?
Is there an easy fix worth trying, or is it speedo out & repaired/refurbed/replaced?
Is the speedo out an easy job?
Thx

speedo out, the small nylon drive gear will have failed unfortunately. to get it out it fairly easy, unscrew the cable, disconnect the light wires and then on either side is a metal tang. push the gauge back and squeeze these tangs in. then draw the gauge out forwards. depending on how big you hards are it can be a bit tricky.

Thanks Broady. So do I need to replace the whole speedo, or can I just change the nylon drive gear, if I can get one!
Tnx.

Hope the pictures work!

The metal cogs all move fine, so which nylon bit has failed?

Is it serviceable, or whole new speedo?

Also, how does the trip button come off so I can get it all apart? Looks like there should be a small grub screw in the knob but mine is missing. Tried pulling it and turning it, bit it hasn't moved..didn't want to give it too much grief in case I break it!

Tnx

Ok, just had another look..it looks like drive has been lost between the metal gear that turns the spindle with the main digits on it and the grey nylon gear at the far end of the spindle..hopefully you can see, just by the number 7 at the back on this photo..

Had a quick search on the internet and someone suggested taking out the shaft that has the cogs on it and rough it up with some sandpaper, so it grips the grey nylon gear at the end.
Tried it, and it all works again.
I slid a screwdriver through the cogs as I removed the central shaft to stop them falling out, and did the reverse when i had sanded down the shaft with some 80 grit.
Yippee..
