type 3 exhaust, silencer vs top heat exchangers
Hi there, I seem to have a compatibility issue between my replacement silencer and the top heat ex-changers.
The threaded bolt section of the silencer is much bigger than the captive nut section of the heat ex-changer and will clearly not fit.
Neither the ex-changers or silencer were fitted to the car when I got it so i couldn't say for sure which is wrong for the year (71/72 fastback FI)
The only clue I have is that the silencer has a heat riser pipe that looks like it needs to be removed.

Would you guys suggest i have the wrong silencer?

The heat riser can be crimped & cut
Heater boxes should fit, assuming they look like items 9 & 10 here: http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/type3/T3pbo/T3pb2-12.htm
Much easier to fit when not attached to the engine. There's a copper crush ring that sits inside the exchanger-if off the engine its less likely to drop out as you offer the silencer up, plus silencer is bloody heavy when you're underneath it trying to get the threads to engage.
Nuts on silencer are 46mm

its not so much that im struggling to fit them, its that the are incompatible parts.(completely different thread sizes) all parts are off the engine.
Ill see if i can get some pics up. im thinking i may have early type heater boxes and late exhaust? been reading up and cant seem to see for sure whether there are early and late types?

i just went to take some pics and i think ive figured out where i was going wrong! the heater boxes have the remains of the old silencer necks still in there. they have been cut nice and square so they looked like they should be that way.
all makes sense now. i guess i just have to do persuade them out without knackering the threads and ill be good to go! 10 minute job! HA!

Yes, those are correct- one should be smaller than t'other (to allow for cylinder offset)
You've just learnt the easy way to get a knackered silencer off!
Plus gas, heat, windy gun & 46mm socket should help, failing that, cold chisel & big hammer on the flats
Do you have the crush rings?
Don't tighten the nuts fully until its all on the car- if you need to borrow the exhaust spanner, I have one

ill leave them soaking for next few days then have a bash.
cheers for that bud

Ah ha, I ended up using oxy aceterlyne and all the wheatabix id eaten for a month. took me about an hour to get my pair free. I then have the media blasted to get all the rust out of the the threads. cleaned all the grit out and a liberal coat of graphite grease before reasaembly. I hope that when they need undoing, this give mes a fair chance.
