Yep, and for spares, make one good one out of two bad ones ?
Even a coil from a different part number may be acceptable, or cast the net wider as other cars used D-Jet too

Loads of choice here, from $16.50 unknown to $100 NOS, plus the shipping cost.
No excuses left at all now

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run
Good morning Broady,
Thanks but this is the wrong part, I think this is for raising the rpm on an automatic car when drive is selected!
Dave has also found some bits on the samba I'm just a bit nervous buying something from the states only to find what is actually posted turns out not to be NOS or even not as advertised especially when spending $100 plus postage.
I'm not that desperate to retain FI.
Doug.

I have bought from The Samba in the US before. Absolutely no problems, it's a VW forum like this one, except a lot bigger, not generally infested by sharks. Used ones from $16.50 ??
Pay by Paypal and you'll have protection anyway.
There's a whole lot more money and pain involved in a carb conversion and you have already done the hard work on diagnosis

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run
My fear is, as I've said previously, this is just one of potentially many 50 year old components to fail so I'm not going to fit a used part as it is likely to be the same or fail very shortly, so by the time I've opted for the NOS part plus postage I'm very close to having spent what I need to covert to carbs and no more worries about the next thing that might fail that will no doubt be rare as hens teeth and cost as much as a small car!
Have you seen how much the contact breakers that control injector pulsing cost - I've seen them on eBay for $400 and I've had to repair mine once so I imagine its only a matter of time before I need to be trying to sourcing some of those.
The bottom line is my car is far from show condition so to justify spending hundreds and hundreds in order just to keep the engine running is difficult to swallow, had it been a concours car I may have considered it but the idea of it is to have some relatively inexpensive classic car fun!

Trigger points https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds ... ton=Search
Trigger points (which are pretty rare) at sensible prices on Samba, prices asked on ebay aren't necessarily what gets paid..
Keeping a classic car running isn't necessarily going to be cost free, but when you compare it to a modern car where a dealer may charge £80 for hooking the car to to a diagnostic machine they're still a good option. Some of the parts are not available new, so there is no option other than to utilise used parts and refurb if necessary.
I have a 412LS and a 412LE. Due to infrequent use I am a bit tired of having to remove the engine cover to pour fuel into the carbs on the LS every time I want to move it. No such issue with the LE in my prior experience.
Other type 3 owners have recommended sticking with the injection setup, but of course Doug, it is of course entirely up to you.

He's got an adjustable Fuel pump & a source of a near complete Carb set up from a source that isn't going to fleece him..only extra expenses will be a gasket set from young Mr Broad & possibly (if I can't find them,) a pair of cut off valves

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run
Everyone,
Its been a while since my last update so here goes, Peter thanks for the offer of a twin carb set up but on reflection I decided to opt for keeping it original so ordered a MAP sensor from Canada off of the samba.com, it arrived and is in good working order- big relief!
That got fitted and then the notch hit me with more issues, running on only 2 cylinders which after much investigation turned out to be spark plugs!
So we are now running on all 4 cylinders but still massively rich, black smoking from the exhaust rich, which again after much investigation turned out to be a bad connection from the cylinder head temp sender - connectors replaced and now running the correct fuelling!
Onto the road test and now the notch has a high load misfire that after being convinced that the FI was comprehensively checked and working had to be HT ignition related or major engine mechanicals. So systematic swapping of HT ignition components lead to the discovery that it was nothing more than the simple distributor cap and rotor arm, whilst these parts were probably about 7 years old they had only done approximately 3000 miles so I was very surprised to discover they had failed so early!
It now drives down the road with no misfire and as well as a 49 year car probably can, hopefully that's it until the next thing obviously!
Thanks for all your help, Doug.

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run
Hi Doug, well firstly great you fixed it! I would have never have guessed the cap or top end of the distributor - only points gap if it had troublestarting. unfortunately the standard of modern replacement parts are not as good as they were when they supplied them as OE and the end customer seems to be the only quantity control.
I would say stick with it... You sound like you're prepared to have a go, ask the right questions and learn, so just the person to take care of a classic. Hopefully you've done the hard work now and can enjoy the ownership for a while!
All the best, Mike
