Luke warm heating? Then you need to go over teh whole system. The heating in a type 3 is fantastic. I suspect youre missing some tubes as is pretty common these days. As 937 says, those lights are good a cheap. For an extra fiver you can get and LED version from screwfix which uses a fraction of the electricity but doesnt give out the heat.
Ive a fair suspision that you are at the very least missing item 30
Have you got a stock exhaust fitted?
Oh and wow, that welding was done quickly!!
Hi Broady, thanks for the diagram, very useful!
You are correct, i’m missing everything from 42 forwards in regards to that part of the system. I don’t suppose you have any photos of your engine bay do you so i can get an idea of what it should look like in practice?

I will try and get some photos, pretty much none of that is in the engine bay. its along side the gearbox. If you look in my thread here theres a few good shots.

The card tube was the kicker, luckily a mate managed to bring me two bits back from WCM when he was in california last year. I struggled to find it else where.
I think ive got some 28s 29s and 31s if you havent got them
The clip thats not numbered on item 30 to secure it to 42. A pair of these work
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DOUBLE-WIRE- ... 2749.l2649
this is what I used for 45
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MIKALOR-W2-S ... 2749.l2649
Have you got 40? If you have then I expect they are not blanked off which means you cooling fan is just blowing the air to amosphere. It needs this sytem installing or they need blanking off.
You may find you have 29 as its screwed to the top of 17 which is the bit where it enters the car.

Thanks for the advice. I have the fay off wednesday so might try and get under it to have a look.
I definitely have 40, albeit not the greatest fit as the rubber joiners have perished

Yeah, 40 is a ubend with a third smaller outlet on it. its critical that outlet is either used in the system or blanked off. If its not blanked off then lots of your cooling air is blowing out of there rather than over your engine.

It’s absolutely chucking it down so i thought i’d take a look into why my indicators have stopped and also all rear lights.
The indicator really looks to have blown as it buzzes, and the plastic looks to have melted so that’s hopefully an easy £5 fix.
The rear lights however is a different story. They all worked fine pre-welding work, but now no joy. They keep blowing the fuse. I’ve checked all the connections and all appear ok, i’m going to replace some of the spade terminals and wire brush the others. One earth looks a little crusty but other than that i see no reason for them to keep blowing. Any bright ideas? Does the bosch box behind the passengers seat have any affect on the rear lights? As i know this was disconnected along with the rear lights when the wings were removed

Ignore my last post, i've now found the wiring diagram for the rear lights. I'm going to replace some of the spade terminals Friday and we'll see where that leaves us. On the plus side, i've now found why the number plate light doesn't work, the spade terminal had fallen to bits

The "Bosch Box" is your voltage regulator for charging the battery. Under neath that is the wiring loom which runs to the back of the car from the fuse box. My suspission is that when the welding took place it has got hot and melted some wires together which is causing your issues

Cheers Broady, that would make sense. This will be fun, especially seeing as the original sheath is in place throughout the entire loom still! I’ll look for signs of melting in the cab, as the wiring in the inner wings doesn’t show any signs of melting.
The headlight switch does act as a regulator does it? As the front sidelights are dead too, but main/high beam is fine. Plus with the hazard relay blowing it makes me think maybe there’s been some kind of power surge

No the head light switch simply acts as a switch. It sounds very much like you have got a short to earth. You wont be able to get a surge as the regulator will take car of that for you.
All that you've got happening is, when you turn on a light, indicator, headlight or other side instead of the wiggly amps flowing down the wire to the bulb, then out the other side down the wire and back to the battery. The current flows from the battery and never makes to the bulb but instead goes directly back to the battery as a result of a wire which is touching earth somewhere. Most likely in a melted loom somewhere.

Always remember V=IR you can safely assume V is constant for this purpose. So the only way for a fuse to exceed is current rating. Ie for I to go up is for R (resistance) to go down

So a bit of progress yesterday. Had both the rear wings off to check for melted wiring, nothing was damaged. I replaced some of the broken spade connectors and tested and funnily enough the side lights are now working fine.
I swapped the hazard relay and then indicators were all good. So i put the fuse box back in and tested again, now the hazards keep blowing the fuse. Bugger. My guess is something is earthing out or crossing over behind the fuse box so i need to pull it out again and go through the wiring there next.
I also fitted new front shocks and greased the rear of the brake pads. Little bits but it all adds up in the long run. Oh, and the number plate light now works

May I suggest a teeny modification?
That metal pipe stub that comes out behind the tail lights is the drain from rear window louvres.. left in it's natural state it's what causes the rear bumper mounts to rot out, as the water just sits between the body & rear wing
The suggested modification is to slip a length of garden hose over it & either drill the airbox to allow the water to drain that way, or even just squish the hose between wing & body

As per peters post, ive done similar many years ago. I p clipped them to the back of the airbox inside the wing and then positioned them so they drain to earth, rather than the bottom of the wing ect.The garden hose does need heating up, but at least you know its a good tight fit, mine have been on at least 6 years now.

Been a while since i last updated.
purplepeter - i appreciate the suggestion, i'll be doing this in the coming weeks.
Following on from my last post, i was still having issues blowing fuses. After a couple of accidental knocks to the fuse box, i found it was sparking against the back of the dash and blowing fuses. It was a case of disconnect the battery and pull the fusebox back out. Some of the spade connectors/pins on the back of the hazard switch were bent and crossing over or touching the dash. To save future headaches, i decided to pull all the switches out and insulate the spade connectors to prevent this from being an on-going issue. I also pulled out a few stray wires which had been retrofitted at some point and were no longer connected.
I also purchased numerous rubber parts from Simon Kelley, so the stock air filter is now mounted once more.
I have a hoard of parts still to fit, just struggling with limited space and limited light/power to get things done. Up next on the list is to get the fibreglass wings prepped and fitted, replace the rear shocks, lower it, replace rear driver's side wing.

Have you got those switches installed with the terminals facing upwards? Thats the correct orientation, and there should be no way for them to touch any other metal that way. There should be a small pressing around the hole which one of the cut outs on the face of the switch locates in. Your can make them out in this photo, pointing at each other.
And highly recommend making the proper escutcheon tool, 10 minute job and makes installing the switches much easier and less likely to scratch the dash.
If you are planning to lower it and replace a rear wing, make those simulatious jobs, its much easier to lower them with a wing off.
Nice to hear youre still getting on with the car even with the seasons being what they are.

Yeah all fitted correctly now, i don’t think they were fitted correctly originally, plus they were slightly loose as when twisting the headlight switch you coupd feel the entire switch turn behind the dash

Yeah electrics are all happy now so that’s something off the list. Felt i needed something to tart up the exterior as it does look like it’s been dragged out of a swamp (which to be fair, it pretty much has been). So i have some 914 alloys which i’m putting on it in the next week or so to hopefully make it look like it’s had some kind of love on the exterior.
I’m waiting on these storms to pass so i can get cracking with it again thoroughly, but i did tinker in the mean time and have fixed the interior clock which is something

Been busy with work, shitty weather and now this ballache of coronavirus.
Got a few hours in today, so fitted a new front wing from Danny, got the new rims on and replaced the dash bulbs with LEDs. Oh and i also finally opened the ash tray to find some fourty year old fag butts and matches!
I’ve repaired the clock, but left it out as there isn’t any wiring for it. I suspect someone popped it in there later on, and never had it wired in. I’ll splice that in at some point soon and re-install it

Every day is a step in the right direction! The virus is small fry, dont let it donimate life and we will all get used to it oh so quickly. Just adpat and improvise. Its amazing how quick things become habit and before you know it you will be fighting the f'ing thing off with out even thinking about it.

I'm not personally bothered by it all to be honest, it's obviously just the fact that with lockdowns etc is does impede things. Going to try and car the car back on the drive so i can be more productive when i "work" from home....
Luckily i work in IT, so we're now busier than ever. i do feel for those who's jobs are at risk or those working in the supermarkets dealing with the riots they're dealing with at the check outs.

While im being careful, ive got a strange condition, one of the side effects is a rather good immune system. So im not overly worried. But my other half falls into the high risk group. So ive had to limit my movements to help protect her. We were due to be in the USA this week, which didnt happen. So weve had a week at home, other than a trip out for the weekly shop. So inadvertantly been sheiled from it all anyway. And plenty of odd jobs done around the house and garden!
