New members 411le Variant

Post by 411ron » 31st October 2009 - 7:50pm

Hi, just joined and i thought it would be a good idea to put a picture on the Forum.
Purchased the car from Renwicks Bristol winter 1973/4 for £1230 and use her during the summer and dry days in the winter (alot of farms with cows muck round here).
Original engine (rebuilt) +gearbox (not) mostly standard only real mods servo fitted and wheel arch liners all round.
Hope some of you find it of interest.
She is a 1970 411le Variant

Or type in 411le its the white one with a black roof.

That's a lovely looking Type 4. It shows the care you have taken of it.

Well, that makes a Type 4 in Bath, one in Bristol, and another in Somerset. Hmm, should I have one then?

I used to go to Renwicks in Bristol for my Beetle servicing from '66 to '69, until I gradually learnt how to service it myself.

It's not in St Phillips now, the ground's all flat - well, built on I suppose by now.

Cheers guys i cant take any credit for this awesome car as i bought it in this condition and i have to say apart from a couple of spots of surface rust its super solid and never been welded apart from small patch in the front inner wing original paint every where and no past bodges of any discription which is refreshing it trully is a fantastic example im such a lucky boy :D

They're the same as the Type 3 ones - are they set up as parking lights or flasher repeaters? Looks like amber lenses so presumably repeaters.

You see them occasionally on stalls at shows, but they are probably fairly rare in good condition - however, plenty of Type 4s and Type 3s have been broken. 311 949 101 is the part number.

It's looking good, any plans to attend any shows this year?

If so are you up for a line-up at VW Action?

You were asking about the paint code.

The green could be Elm green L60D used on 70-71 models, but it looks more like Sumatra green L61B used on 72-73 models. Obviously yours isn't a '73 model as it would be a 412 not a 411. If your chassis number starts 4112 it's a '71 model, and if it starts 4122 it's a '72 model.

Look at http://home.clara.net/hallvw/dating.htm and see the little painted production plate on the front panel. Across the end is a stamped paint code - 09 (or 9) is Elm green; 17 is Sumatra green. These numbers won't be recognised by paint suppliers, so use the L codes above. If you're lucky, there may be a sticker on the side of the front boot with a paint code on it, but they have often been damaged or dropped off.

Cheers for the info Dave thats a great help i appreciate it, also do you know of a good quality but reasonable body shop around the Bristol area to get a few things sortted. Thanks again Mart :D

Shawn71 unfortunatly i wont be at any shows with the 411 this year as its not on the road at the mo and money is very tight but slowly getting things done when money allows but the aim is for next year fingers crossed. 8)

You know your stuff Dave you are correct its Sumatra Green L61B No. 17 on the painted production plate and also still have the little sticker you mention on the inner wing of the boot. :D many thanks Mart.

I haven't used a body shop, but there's a place near HorseWorld in Whitchurch just off the A37 which was recommended to me. You could ask Paul Dickenson who is into restoring classic VWs, and probably knows a good contact; Paul runs the garage at the top of Red Lion Hill, Knowle, Bristol. 0117 9776544.

Yes, there's quite a gathering of 411/412's in the South West now.
