72 square running project

Post by rustydubs » 25th August 2010 - 3:06pm

well here goes, the start of another project, but this should be a keeper as its our family car.
won off ebay, a 72 squareback, rhd, in pastel white, 1 owner from new, last used in 1988. the guy who i bought it off got it off the original family, he bought it put it through an mot to sell, a few welding patches, brakes, fuel lines, bulbs etc needed for mot.
here its is as i bought it.

on further inspection it wasnt quite as solid as i had hoped but it was a good starting point, will be doing most work needed as a running resto until i decide to spray it up, when the body will come off the pan which will be in about a years time.
first a few accessories n mods to keep me going.

Nicely looked after car and a great starting point. It shows there are still a few out there.

Yes, they often have more rust that you can see at first.

Looks like you have been getting damp in the door - check the slits in the corners front and rear are clear. There is supposed to be a sheet of thick plastic membrane on the door framing to stop damp getting to the back of the door card.

door cards are shot, front screen corners are rotted through, so 1st big job to sort before winter to get it water tight!

nice square, don't want to be a kill joy it's 8) a friendly warning though - i got fined for driving on the road with all red rear lights. said that i had been at a show at the weekend and forgot to change them back. didn't care, had to pay up £80 and get an mot station to sign to say i'd changed them. the cop also said i wasn't supposed to be on black and white plates and added this to his list of defects, but i argued this one - tax exemption - they dropped that, only after checking that the letters and spacing 'conformed to regulations' though

don't know what the cops are like around your way, but you might want to save the red rear lights for shows and private road. i suppose you could run your indicators through the reverse lights and the reverse light through one of the fogs on your bumper, mine were/are all red

Plates changed from Jan 1973 - in fact when the historiic class finishes.

Sounds like a bit of a spiteful cop.

yep he was definately in a bad mood and looking for defects, but they wouldn't have it with the lights. they did mention a cut off year for uk cars with all red lights, but can't rememver what this was early 50s

Red rear lenses do look cool - I have a set for my late square when I finally get around to finishing it! - One option is to fit indicators in the reverse light section with orange bulbs - another option is to fit green leds to the indicator - through the red lense - the light appears orange - apparently... Nice car - pastel white is a good colour for a square.

I can see no scientific justification in that, and even if they look a bit orange, they will be very dull too.
Red lenses don't look as good on a rear-ended Type 3.

Agreed - but if the indicators flash orange, the brake lights red - they are legal as long as they are bright. Strange hoe Europeans (some) want to fit all red lenses and US want to fit euro lenses...
