Now my car is off the trailer I thought I should put some current photos up for you.

These were taken just after the MOT (she passed) , so now the key mechanicals etc are sorted I intend to use her a little this year before getting the body done properly over the winter. Cosmetically I need to get sorted out with some type 4 mirrors, (Can you get the glass separate?), wheels freshened up and she needs a proper wash and the glass cleaned. I also want to re-do the interior, if possible.

You may find somewhere to cut the glass - I know someone here found a place to do it, and they even chamfered the edge.
Be careful what you seal it in there with - get a proper silicone sealant suitable for mirrors. The general type will damage the silvering.

Earlier today I got the new tyres fitted to a set of Revolution RFX alloys I bought last week (they remind me of a mix between Porsche Cookie Cutters and Cup 1 alloys) and took her out for a spin. I'm happy to say that I clocked up over 50 miles without incident, and the car felt better at the end of the run than the beginning. The driver was also getting the hang of getting the gears. I'm not sure if that's the car, or my memory that's making believe that the gear selection was never that vague before.

I still need to get my head around the carbs. It hesitates a little when moving off from a standstill, unless I give it some extra revs. After running for about 15 minutes I found that the idle speed had increased dramatically, to the point where the car was probably ticking over at 2000 rpm meaning 40 mph without touching the accelerator

I think I'm going to check the condition of the balance pipe elbows again, and revist the purpose of each adjustment screw. The only thing that I know is "wrong" is that the thermostat cable is broken meaning full cooling is being applied at all times. I know this isn't great for the warm up period, but can't see it should make any difference when the engine is warm I'm intending to get the thermostat together with some other bits when I can get up to the free carriage amount. I'm trying to find new elbows 021 129 637 F and carb
sealing rings without having to wait 7 weeks, part number 021 129 625 B I believe

Shawn, many thanks for the compliment, glad you like them. They do look better on the car than I expected so am pleased with my short term solution. I'll need to get hold of some ET41's if I want to make it original again. Lots of other things to be worked on in the meantime

Peter, the advice on parts sources is much appreciated. I'm still trying to work out if the availability check on classicparts.de is just so people can know if something is available before they visit their local VW OPC, or if you can simply order direct.

Dave, I'll have another search through the forum to see where I may be able to get some mirror glass cut and the best way to fit it

Lots of little jobs after the MOT......
Swapped carbs
replaced carb elbows
set up ignition timing
set up carbs
fixed fuel gauge
fixed radio
replaced gearstick linkages
repaired seatbelt mechanism
sourced a few bits, including a NOS door mirror

I want to try to see if I can locate some replacement material for the seats and have been looking into getting the bodywork done & a respray. The inner wings have already been plated at the top, like yours, but I would say it's to MOT standard, not restoration standard so that'll need doing again. The question is, just how far do I go with it. I'm probably going to go as far as a wings off, doors off & glass out respray up to the door rubbers. As a gold metallic with lacquer topcoat I know just how hard it can be to get a good finish from when I tried 30 years ago on my first 412.

oh............and I forgot to say, about 750 miles

Someone was asking if anyone else wanted a door mirror glass cut. He was going to order several. I can't remember now, and can't find it in the forums I would expect. Or was that you, David?

That was me, which is a reminder for me to get them done. Just mine and one more set at the moment

Any idea of price? The club probably could buy some in the standard late size if the price is reasonable. There's still the froblem of fitting. I wonder if anyone does a service? The stainless steel ones are probably most likely. I guess the cast stems are just as likely to be corroded though.
