New to the club and new to my Type 3 Fastback

Post by Type1234 » 24th June 2019 - 7:44pm

Hi the name is Don Whyte. I live in the North East of Scotland, Aberdeenshire. I have been a VW Nut for most of my car driving life but the Type 3 is one car I have never previously owned. I would like to say I'm the proud owner of my new Fastback Reg no. NLO 391K however buying a car unseen from Ebay is not good sense and the car I received did not quite match the glowing description given by the seller. But, I have my type 3 and I am fully committed to getting it up to full spec and down the road a bit I will be a very proud owner. When I figure out how to add photos I will.

Welcome on board Don. :)

We always like pictures, so if you look at the top of the topic list there's a fairly detailed guide from Broady on how to include photos.

In the short term you could always post a link to the auction, let us know what issues you have and start asking questions

There's a wealth of information in webpages too - just select one of the 5 menu items on the top row above

Here's a couple of photos I found for others to see your new ride, until you get some new ones up of your own.

So, it seems there's some corrosion to deal with, how are the mechanicals ?

Nice addition with the sunroof

Hi David, Thanks for the photos. I'm finding out more about the car every day. The interior is a mess, cloth seats in the front and the standard black vinyl in the rear. Headlining painted black and burst all over the place. The car has been lowered at the front and I have already put that back to how it needs to be to get up and down my farm road. I don't know if this is a fastback problem but there appears to be corrosion at either side of the rear window. Sadly the seller on Ebay was very economical with the truth about the condition of the car. The car does run, not very well but I'm working on that. Lots to do and will maybe take some pics of the general condition to let others see the dangers of buying unseen. Don

I'm not so knowledgeable on type 3's, but it may be fair to say that there are corrosion issues in all places on these cars.

Get some photos up (there's a new feature using attachments, which is what I trialled above) and I'm confident the advice will start to roll in :)

HI Dave, I'm still struggling with uploading photos. The advice given ask you to click on a "full editor button" at the bottom of the page. I can't see anything like that.

Image I didn't expect the car to be perfect but I did hope the seller would be reasonably honest. Here is a copy of the Ebay description from the seller.

"Very nice looking 1972 Classic Volkswagen Fastback type 3 1.6 Manual , RHD with sliding Manual rag top in working order . It is mot and tax exempt has had New brakes front calipers and pads and rear shoes/ wheel cylinders , sounds awesome very nice sounding engine and exhaust
It's been dry stored and unused now for last few years due to elderly owner being unwell to drive , starts up first time and drives good , it's been stood for a while so will need a little tlc , some bits of rust on exterior as you can see nothing big that can't be sorted interior in good condition, car has been in regular use and well kept and maintained, looks stunning will make someone a very nice usable classic car" Presumably the elderly owner lowered the car at the front, fitted alloys with low profile tyres, fitted a Bugpack exhaust, fitted a sub-woofer and amp and painted the headlining black.

Hmm, that C post looks a bit crusty, but under the bonnet looks good. The rust on the valance near the wing / screen is common and you should pull the carpets out and see what the floorpans are like.

Headlinings are easy to solve, they just cost time & money

all sortable but eBay advert is not clever.
it does notneed TLC - it needs fabrication.
the elderley owner that lowered, fitted a banging stereo and rims - what a joke -

car looks like its worth sorting and getting back to how it should be - hope you left suitable feedback for the seller...

I couldn't leave feedback because I paid cash, not Paypal and then after I won the auction he cancelled the listing. He has now left Ebay and I am not surprised by that. The floorpans don't look too bad but definitely had some repairs along the heater channels. The front seats (not VW) have been bolted straight through the floor and the original runners have been removed so I don't know what type of runners it had i.e. three point or the older style. Under the bonnet looks better than it actually is. Area beside the brake fluid reservoir, area beside the fuel tank corner and both inner wings just behind the bonnet springs will all need patched/welded. I'm disappointed that I bought a car that needs so much done to it when all I wanted was a car that maybe needed tinkering with as opposed to a full restoration but I wanted a type 3 and I have one so just need to suck it up and get on with it.

Don, how much experience do you have - mechanically and bodywork wise. Just a bit of extra information so we have an idea about what work can be DIY, and what you will need to get others to do.

I will tackle most things on the car. I probably am better on mechanicals than bodywork. Since I got the fastback I have replaced a brake cylinder on the driver side rear wheel, which was leaking badly, despite the seller saying it had new brakes all round. I have raised the front suspension back to where it should be, Welded the throttle pedal hinge/bracket to the correct place where it now lines up with the throttle, replaced the alloys with steel wheels and in the process of preparing steel wheels for painting. I restored a VW Trekker a few years ago and did most of the work, apart from final respray and sorting out electrics. Electrics are probably my least favourite area of competence.

That sounds like good news then, a decent skillset and the willingness to tackle the resto yourself, with a determination to get it done.

I assume you have seen these pages and seen how your car measures up in these areas ?

Is this going to be a rolling resto, or are you leaving it off the road and just cracking on with it ?

I had planned a rolling resto, if it needed it, before I actually saw the car in the flesh. After seeing it I decided to get it running properly and use it till the end of the summer then take it off the road for a full resto, but it may come off the road before then. The engine will have to come out, various oil leaks I believe or maybe one big one and I need to change the exhaust and get rid of the Bugpack one. I have a standard one ready to fit, I am just missing the tail pipe. You don't have a spare tailpipe do you? I have had a look at those pages but after I bought the car.

I have a type 4, not a type 3, so I don't have any spares for you, sorry.

Many others do, generally tucked away for members who need them, so the best option is to put another post up in the wanted section

I had a 412 Variant many years ago. I loved that car but for a youngish guy commuting to work it was really heavy on the fuel. So many cars I wish I still had!

Looks like a pretty solid starting point you've got. That C pillar is a nasty. But its repair able.

http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/forum ... &start=550

Have a look in here, there isn't much of the car I have had in fundamentals. Im not saying all my work is right/perfect but you can use it for reference to see what should be where.

If I were you and knowing what I do now. Get the airbox out under the dash and give the metal air deflector a good clean our and dry for a few days then get a good coating of dinitrol on it. Its better to save that than try and repair it later. Ask me how I know? :)

I will need to check the airbox. When the car is out in the rain I have a leak around the drivers and passengers footwell I guess that may be an airbox problem. Thanks for all the advice and links etc. I'm sure I am going to use everyone.

Hi, I haven't been doing much to the fastback in the last few weeks, had some major DIY projects around the house but I did change the oil. For some reason it had way too much oil in it and it may have been someone trying to counteract the oil leaks. I had planned to run the car till the end of the summer then take it off the road for the resto but there are so many things wrong with it I'm tempted to start taking it to bits now.
