Interior and upholstery options

Post by 937carrera » 17th June 2013 - 8:34am

I am trying to identify what trim was fitted to my 1974 412LS from new. I have looked around at the various brochure scans including at http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit ... page12.jpg but cannot seem to find a match. Of course if I don't know what I have, then there's no chance of finding some replacement materials (as opposed to a slim chance) , and I would like to recover the drivers seat in the original trim if at all possible

The paint colour is Maya Metallic, my photos haven't come out great and i have had to tweak the colours to make them look "right"

Image

The carpet, which I would describe as a brown / dark beige fleck

Image

The seat trim, which I would describe as a brown / beige arrowhead design - is this what was called bamboo in the US ?

Image

The door panels, which I would describe as tan

Any help gratefully received

The USA didn't seem to go in for cloth trim at all.
My Type 4 parts book doesn't go as far as 1974 models.

You may find the continental Type 4 owners have a brochure that lists the various cloth upholstery they were offered. I've a Type 3 version for 73 but I'm sure Maya metallic wasn't offered on Type 3s.

Maya metallic is listed in the parts book with 42 lapis blue, 44 leather beige or 50 black fabric. If you get a birth certificate from the museum at Dieselstrasse Wolfsburg, they will supply details such as the colour spec, which I think includes the fabric codes.

OK, that was useful thanks

I have been doing some more searching and have found a 1974 brochure for the 412 from Germany, available from http://www.volkswagen-classic.de/docume ... 8.1973.pdf

This seems to confirm your comment about the limited choice of trim and cloth in the USA.

From what I can now see, it seems that my seat upholstry is the bambus / bamboo (code 08) with Hellas metallic being our Maya metallic. The combination of paint code and bamboo cloth seats doesn't seem to be one of the possible combinations. Is it possible that the UK spec / options were different to Germany ?

So I suppose that leaves me with wondering where I can source some material to recover the seat(s) and how to identify / source some new original carpet. I have already found http://www.himmelservice.de/english/start.htm , http://www.stockinteriors.com/CutSewnCa ... box_holder and http://www.cabrio.de/khm/index.php?opti ... 12&lang=en as possible sources but none of them seem to have the original materials

Here are a couple of links to other German brochures for more general interest, the first to the 411 and the next for the facelifted type 3

Interesting brochures. I have a copy of the 411 one in English; many of the pictures (including the one with the almost-caricature German beer-drinking fisherman) are printed the other way round to make the cars RHD. However the pictures on pages 2 and 3 are the same way round, and the blue car in the field has the grasses in the same position, and yet these are RHD in the English language version. Were VW as advanced with Photoshop as they were with fuel injection?
The pale blue car in the forest remains LHD though, as does the cutaway drawing.

Just spotted that in my copy the Variant with the beer-drinking fisherman has its fuel flap on the wrong side. I never noticed that before!

I've a couple of late Type 3 brochures, one in German and one in English. ISTR they have similar anomalies in the pictures.
