New member introduction

Post by 937carrera » 9th June 2013 - 12:54pm

I have just bought a 412LS having owned a couple of 412LE in the early 80's - they were my first cars, so 30 years on I'm back in the world of aircooled VW's :D

I have been lurking around here for quite a few years, but have now registered as I'm sure I'm going to need some help, particularly getting to know who the good specialist sources are for parts, I know some bits are almost unobtainable, but then again that sometimes seemed to be the case 30 years ago as well. One difference I have already noticed is that while the main agents had moved on from the type 4 30 years ago, that seems to be the case with the independents now.

I can't post any pictures of the car at the moment as it's still on the trailer. I hope to have it running and on the road this summer (clearly not wanting to set myself an ambitious target) ;) . The car will be known to some of you from this thread viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6129&p=31024#p31024. I personally knew the car back in the 80's when it was in wonderful condition. It's not as tidy today, but even so it's still in better condition than my '73 LE variant was when I bought it in 1981. First job back then was to replace the rusty front wings !

I'm reasonably competent with a set of spanners, not great on bodywork.

It would be great to meet up with other type 4 owners - which is the best attended (in terms of type 4) show to go to, preferrably with a jumble ?

I'm sure I'll be receiving rather than giving in the beginning..... given that a lot of 412's are in Maya Metallic, I have customised the standard avatar to make the one below, but can't see how to use it, can anyone help ?

I don't think you can change the avatar choices unfortunately..

looking forward to seeing the pictures though! I'm more knowledgeable with Type 3's but may be able to help regardless :) for some reason the early 411's always appealed to me but it's fining a good 'un that's the problem.

Not many shows are attended by Type 4s as there isn't many of them left to attend any shows. I have seen three at VW Action a couple of years ago, one of which was mine.

If you're able to get it back on the road this summer another line up at Action could be an idea, assuming we can get a club display again.

Thanks for the reply Mark. The car's not too far from Doncaster, still near Selby so definitely in your neck of the woods. Do you have any suggestions for shows to go to or local clubs ? I was a member of the Selby VW club back in the '80s, but understand that folded many moons ago

That's great and those dates look good for me. I've been to Harewood before so I know it's a great venue. It's also a good target to see if I can have the car back on the road for. :)

Sorry 937Carrera, the avatars were set up by my son years ago - i tried to add the odd special (a purple Notch), but couldn't get the transparency right, so gave up! I can't remember how I added that special one now! I've saved yours and will try again to get to the avatar gallery and see if I can manage to upload it.

BTW, do you have a more accessible name?
Dave.

I have done the name thing, judging by the last few posts it's not a differentiation feature. :)

I am also admin on a phpbb forum so am more than happy to assist if that's of any value (and remember the huge problems of the spambots, which is fortunately now much reduced, but still a problem when done by humans). The avatar gallery images are stored at images/avatars/gallery by default. If you want to send me the purple avatar (for purplepeter ?) I can sort the transparency out quite easily. Like most things, it's not difficult when you have the right software and can remember how to use it. Changing the colours is not a trivial matter, whoever did the avatars in the first pace did a great job

David(oft) I feel very fortunate to be the new owner and knew there was a fair bit of interest in it (and therefore potential for disappointment from others) :( . It's a genuine straight car which vee.dubster has already put some good work into & I intend to finish off as soon as I can.

Hi David, I've my son Steve to thank for the original work on the site, including the avatars, and some follow-up stuff to stop the spam getting out of hand. He worked on the Type 3 colours, and they didn't make gold ones. Steve set up the Club Polo forum and website, and ran it for a few years. He's more into freelance games programming these days. but if we get major probs would help out. The purple avatar is for a USA guy I've been friends with for years through vwtype3.org, who likes to put turbos in and race them! I'll dig it out for you and we can add both to the folder.

Sorry - I didn't notice the name in the sig.
Dave.
