It's probably not much help but one the books I have states 'All Automatic Transmission Fluids (ATF) with the Dexron test mark are suitable and it will be found that the majority of mineral oil produced by well-known manufacturers will be suitable' This onfo comes from the Workshop Manual for Volkswagen 411 and 411 LE 1968-72 by Kenneth Ball, Autopress Ltd.

There is quite a detailed section on the auto boxes in this book.

Exactly the same book i was just turning to to check!
Level is checked with the Engine running.
Dextron ATF is fairly common stuff...its red & very runny!

Remember there's also a final drive part, which uses a GL5 spec Hypoid oil. Just don't mix them up!
Dave.
