Eberspacer timer wiring?

Post by shawn71 » 10th March 2011 - 5:40pm

Having recently changed my dash I noticed why my timer doesn't work for the eber, its not connected to anything!

Having also done a google search that pulls up very little useful info (what a surprise!) I did find something from a few years ago regarding kps70 buying a switch and asking how to wire it up on Vzi...so Kieron if you read this and if you got yours working, how did you do it? Or is it still on the 'to do' list from 2006 :D

ALso if anyone else knows how to connect it up please let us know.

Have you looked at Jens Vagelpohl's Type4.org?

This page: http://manuals.type4.org/ba4/ch1/ba4_11f.html covers the wring diagrams for the Eber heater.

Yes Judi, I found that one via google and as good as it is it doesn't show the connections on the rear of the clock or if they go straight to the switch or take another route.

Hi Shawn,
good question that one. I did get it working back then. I'll go out and have a look see what I did with the wires. They're kind of all dangling down in the 412. I might need a few days as work is mad.

I've got the clock in the dash with the 24 hour timer on it that currently isn't connected to the eber control switch in the dash. There are a couple of connections on the rear of this clock that aren't on other clocks I have that don't have the 24 hour timer so I'm assuming that these are to connect to the dash mounted eber switch but I don't know how at the moment.

Searches for wiring diagrams don't seem to include this part of the eber wiring circuit, or if they do I must be reading them wrong as I can't see the connections on any of the diagrams I've found.

and looking at that one the connections on the rear of the clock aren't shown either.

The clock is labelled 'Y' and the eber switch is 'E13'.

The actual diagram itself is great, just missing the bits I need as do all the other diagrams on the samba and the many other ones I've looked at.

That's another one that I've viewed as well :)

Thanks for the help Mart but I think someone else has found the answer courtesy of the ratwell site

http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Tachograph.html

'There are 4 contacts on the back of the gas heater timer clock + the "hole" for the instrument light:

ground - unlabeled right tab (any brown ground wire will do)
+12V - rearmost tab at back of clock gets power from emergency switch (just as plain jane clock would)
B - left side, connects to terminal 30 on gas heater timer switch (power via fuse S9)
30 - left side, connects to terminal 4 on gas heater timer switch (bypasses accessory fuse S10)
Bosch terminal designations aside, this hookup is really quite simple: the clock timer acts as a bypass switch for the gas heater timer switch. When the clock timer is set the ignition key position (off) prevents the heater knob from activating the gas heater when you set the temperature. When the timer activates it powers the same terminal that the heater switch would if the ignition key was on.'

I'll pull the switch out later and double check it has the correct connections, fingers crossed :)

Looking at those wiring diagrams it all makes sense!

That's why I don't touch wiring

Didn't get chance to do this today as I've been swapping seat backs to regain my headrest which necessitated replacing broken springs. A job well worth doing as the seats are much more comfortable.

As for the timer I'll try to find time at the weekend or the end of next week when I've got time off, either way I'll report back how I get on :)

It works!!

The connections detailed on the ratwell link are correct and the eber now comes on with the timer.

That's how mine works too. I wish I'd found that link before!!!
However, I was still left with the problem of my fuel gauge not working. Shawn - did you have to change your sender unit? Which fuel sender unit do you have in your 412?

My fuel guage is still dead as well.

I'm sure the fault is the sender unit/fuel tank end because you can earth the fuel sender wire at the tank end and the guage will read full.

The sender units are the cyindrical type that about a foot long. I've tried a couple of sender units and they have broken resistance wires inside of them that the float contacts with. I've read somewhere that this wire can be replaced with wire of the same resistance and then an extra earth wire attched which should fix the problem. A job I've put of doing for long enough I suppose but then the tripometer works and I know I can get 280-300 miles on a tank so filling up 200 miles will do...

See in workshop - we'll check the wire needed and get a supply -that's easier than guessing...

You may not need the extra earth wire -it depends what's making contact.
Dave.
