FUDGE is back in the fold!

Post by kembiff » 2nd October 2010 - 11:12pm

I just brought FDG393L home to Durham from Leeds. Loving it too much already! 8)

Looking to rebuild the history as well as the car. Do let me know if you owned her before and what you did to her along the way.

The previous owner was Martin ? who only had her since June 2010. (bought on a whim from Ed ?)
I have corresponded with Barndoor Deluxe who has owned it and convinced me it would be a good idea to buy her. I think he's right!

What else do you know? There are only 5 or 6 former keepers I think so it should be possible to go right back to her birthdate back in 1973.

Jane and Bryan Terry used to own her, down on the Type 4 farm in Kent. They had her in the '80s as their main transport. I may even have some photos from back then, but might take some finding.

I am sure I have some pictures of 'fudge' somewhere. Will check my photobucket album later.

I am also sure this car used to be in the concours in the late 80's, and I think it was owned by a family from the midlands somewhere.

Checked my album, and Fudge is not in there.

He will probably be in some of my old photos that will need to be scanned in and uploaded.

Im looking hard for a front wing so I can do the resto the resto and get her back on the scene.

My students at school loved the car (I mean stickers) but they are not for me. At risk of removing a vehicle from the zombie response unit - anyone know the best way to remove them from the paintwork?

Something like white spirit can't do a lot of harm, or sticky stuff remover may do it (office suppliers).

A warm hair-dryer blast may help to soften the adhesive. Don't use a hot-air gun, it's likely to blister the paint.

Avoid anything like cellulose thinners unless you're sure the paint is 2-pack everywhere.

Very cool car dude, loving these right now!

My mate uses his girlfriends nail varnish remover with a blade wraped in thin cloth to remove transfers and stickers from his bus!so far it hasn't scrapped, bleached or damaged the paint or bodywork!

Cool pics,what's it like inside?

Cheers

Probably nail-varnish remover is OK for old paint - be a bit careful if it has been repainted. I think that's amyl acetate, which is not far removed from cellulose thinners..

Another possibility is a halogen lamp to warm the panel up - like a site lamp - to warm and soften the adhesive.

Thanks for the suggestions and praise - the interior is straight out of the 70's (of course) and has that slick vinyl feel about it! just a shame that the drivers seat has a small tear in.
As far as chemicals go - I will steer clear. I am a chemistry teacher and I would say that nail varnish remover (often acetone) is a bad idea for paint work! Tell your mate that meths would be a better option.. (But why does he keep having to remove transfers??) Im going for the heat option when i do it i think.

I wonder how many teachers own these strange machines? They thought my rusty beetle was hysterical before the saw fudge!

You could be right about the acetone, kembiff. My wife doesn't use it (nor me!) and the lovely smelling solvent probably isn't used now.

I don't think I've ever really been 'cool' but I did hear my Fastback referred to as a 'cool car' by a kid as I drove in one morning.

My nickname became Mr Whippy when I started driving an orange and white camper - could have been my thick white curls of hair on my head too!

One of the secretaries wanted something to clean her phone with (well you know what its like answering calls whilst eating chips & doughnuts over a period of several years!) anyhow...the lab technician gave her some acetone to give her telephone a 'like-new' look and the secretary managed to morph the phone into more or less one lump of art such that it kept ringing all day as the buttons were steadily melting into the frame - so - picture the scene - chocolate coated doughnuts on one side, potentially angry parents ringing all day on the phone on the other...What's a girl to do??

True story, and she is still works here!!
