Alloy sill cover clips

Post by Creationblue » 22nd June 2014 - 9:42pm

I believe they are called U clips, they fit into the channel of the sill protection covers and 'hit' on the ridge of the sill. I see this company have something similar http://www.bresco.com/acatalog/Cable_Clips.html but I wondered if anyone has used something before I try the entire range

The proper ones are just U-shaped, with tangs on both sides to grip the triple layer edge of the sill. I think the ones for the simple strip are the same as the wider 'de-luxe' trim. I probably have some, but I expect others have also. I'll have a look when I'm back. If no-one else contacts you, remind me in case it's slipped my mind.
Dave.

Are these the same as for the Type 4 sills? If so, they can be bought at VW Heritage through their Classic Parts portal. The part number is 411-853-577.

Have a look on Custom and Commercial site, I got some for my sill trim from there and they fitted well with no problems at all.

All the best

Thanks for the replies guys

The above clip is all I could find out of the advice offered, I would imagine type4 covers are more like the late type3 but I guess it's worth taking a punt on them.

How many will I need?

Think the clips will be the same, I've got some early sill covers that had a clip in but it fell apart trying to get it out, but it looked the same as used in the lates.

Are your covers the wide alloy type too?

I've got a pair of both, they both fix to same bit I think. As in, I've got a slim set out of an early notch (I think), and the wider that cover all the sill.

311 853 577 seems to be clips for the reduced trim level, and 577 A for the higher spec. trim. I can't see why the sill edge is any wider on the different trim levels, but maybe the wider trim plate takes a different clip. I've only the more basic trim strip to look at, so can't advise further. They have spikes which grip, which is why they tend to be damaged if you try to remove them from the strip - it goes on easily, but isn't as easy to remove.

The number required per car is given as 8. I think you would get away with fewer, though.
Dave.

That's very interesting Dave, I just assumed they were early/late differences. I should have my other trims early next week as they're at work and I'm off currently, will compare both and take pics, might satisfy our curiosity.
