Wheel width and fitment

Post by Whizzler46 » 15th April 2013 - 12:00pm

I want to put steels back on my Fastback (currently running tatty 2 litre alloys it was purchased with) and have acquired some beetle steels. I was thinking of having the rears banded to 5.5j from the standard 4.5j. Has anyone done this or know if it will fit without causing any issues?

Thanks

is it early or late? tried wider rears on my early square and had clearance issues on arches, but mine has been lowered :-)

I'm on 6 1/2J all round. 175 on the front and 195 on the back. There is a photo of my car in amongst my threads, alloy wheels

I have 7.5j x 17, 205/40/17 tyres and don't have any rubbing issues.

I have got porsche brakes on mine though.

Beetle wheels have the wrong offset and will cause rubbing issues.

Thanks, its a late 73 currently one notch down at the front and standard rear. Plan is to go a as low as possible on the standard beam and get the rear to match.

Also read many things about tyre sizes and now confused. Any recommendations for tyres on steels for low cars.

The 4.5J Beetle rims come in a few different offsets depending on what they were fitted to.
Some aren't that far away from Type 3 offsets (ET 45) I think 1303 ones are ET 41.
It should be stamped in the centre, or can be measured quite easily.
Its the distance between the mounting face of the wheel and the middle point between the tyre mounting faces - sorry if thats a lesson in egg sucking...
I guess if the wheels are being banded then they can be adjusted to give whatever offset you need.

This is a neat calculator for working out offsets and tyre sizes http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

Great, it sounds like you are in luck then... :o)
The two ET41's can be your fronts, and the rears banded to suit.

Rauno, Sorry I didn't see that, I've just PM'd you...

Was thinking the opposite, ET41 banded because the others are going be either 41 or lower offset maybe up to ET31 beetle ones giving more poke without banding.

More poke??? Sorry you lost me... :?

My reason for saying that was that I think I would want to keep the front offsets as close as possible to stock to avoid altering the scrub radius too much http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrub_radius.

The rears won't make a lot of differance so can be changed to whatever fits best.

In any case isn't moving the tyre out going to give you more of a problem with rubbing than moving it in?

Just my thoughts...
