Swap a T3 dynamo with a T1 version?
Swap a T3 dynamo with a T1 version?
I have searched for this, but couldn't find anything on this, so here we are.
I have a T3 that currently does not charge. I want to convert it to an alternator setup when the time and money is right, so for a quick fix, I wondered if I could swap the old dynamo with one from a bug?
I've had a quick look and have seen that the part numbers are slightly different, and that the unit is mounted the other way around.....is this possible for a swap if I take off the fan and move the end cap over from the T3 dynamo?
Thanks

Never tried it, but I think it would be highly unlikely to fit.
You'd need to chop off the end that the fan mounts to as the Type 3 end cap is blind.
Thats presuming the end caps were interchangeable & the bodies were the same diameter (there's no reason they should be).
The numbers are simular because they are both dynamos, but they are designed for different cars so the one number differance does not mean anything I'm afraid.
Do you know its the Dynamo at fault? Regulators, the wiring and batteries are usually more troublesome...

Do a search on here, alternater conversions have been done, not with a beetle alternater though.

I did this to mine many years ago. I recall it worked fine. I just left the extra shaft alone out the back of the dynamo. No it's not the correct way of doing it but if it's a quick solution then it'll be fine. Best of luck

Thanks for the helpful (and quick) replies...not sure which way to go with this yet, but I feel a lot more informed to make a choice now!

Thanks Angelo!
I've seen your finished car before, it makes you seem more human to see it in a less immaculate form!
