Clutch pedal height on a 412
Clutch pedal height on a 412
I know the clutch is hydraulic, but can the height of the pedal be adjusted? Mine is rather low and I'm jammed up almost sitting on the steering wheel to change gear. So ....... Anyone know?
Thanks for your time

The only adjustment possible is the free-play which is defined in the book. You can't adjust the height or leg-room.
Sorry.

Thanks Judi Ah, I shall have a look. It's the biting point I was hoping could be adjusted. At the moment it's about a half inch off the floor............If it was a mid height biting point all would be well. I take it by book you mean the Haynes or equivalent?

I think you will find air in the system to blead the clutch the blead nipple is on the slave cylinder on top of the bell housing behind the fire wall between the engine /gearbox.

She has had a nos slave cylinder and rebuilt clutch cylinder ecently and all bled up till no air coming out. I really hope there's not a leak somewhere. That's all I'd need on top of the current engine trouble
Re: Clutch pedal height on a 412
Just an update. Think the pedal height mystery is solved. So I've found that the pedal gradually gets lower with use, but I can hook it up and feel the difference in the smoothness(better) of gear change to when the pedal has sunk lower. So the guess would be that as there is no fluid loss from the system, that it is seeping past a worn seal and hence being able to improve the clutch function by hooking the pedal up which would be drawing the fluid back to where it should be to give the correct pressure to operate the clutch effectively. It would seem the most logical answer is that it's most likely the master given it's a rebuilt one and the slave is nos.
I hope the above is making sense. So I'm off now to browse the forums for the people that do the rebuilds using the stainless insert to correct worn bores.

Re: Clutch pedal height on a 412
Kieron had his brake master rebuilt by Pastparts, or something like that. Let us know how you get on as the 411 will probably need both its masters doing at some point along the long path of getting it roadworthy.

Thanks Shawn
Re: Clutch pedal height on a 412
yep - good service from Pastparts, is a tad pricey.
Brake master cylinder still going strong

I have to say, they weren't as pricey as I thought they'd be. I've been quoted £50 + vat and postage. I was expecting a lot more when you said pricey
Re: Clutch pedal height on a 412
RESULT! They phoned me yesterday as they actually had a brand new unused one on the shelf that was cheaper than rebuilding my old one

I think I paid 105 quid for the master cylinder rebuild. I guess if it lasts for a few years then fine.

Re: Clutch pedal height on a 412
update: I now have the rebuilt master in. Happy with that, but the biting point was still way too low for my little legs
So I looked at it and worked it out as couldn't find anything giving direct reference to clutch free play or pedal height.
You have to undo the back nut to twiddle the spigot thing that goes into the rubber bellow type thing on the master cylinder. I can now ahve my seat in a normal position Yes that's a knuckle skinned under the plaster, but that was coz I hacksawed it off last week

Re: Clutch pedal height on a 412
Page 83 in the Haynes has details of clutch pedal adjustment the 1mm clearance on the pushrod is vital & equates to 3-4mm free play at the pedal
Re: Clutch pedal height on a 412
I'm driving her now Paul. She's still having snags and not running right. But..... after everything has been looked at it is looking like it is simply too much crud in the tank, so the faster I go the more it's sucking and pulling the crud over the mesh and restricting fuel. It seems to be the only answer now. I popped in on Funky Pete yesterday and he thinks the same, so I need to get a decent size jerry can, some fuel line and going to make a temporary fuel tank with that and see how she runs on a long journey. I have a sneaky suspicion that because the tank is a complete ballache to drop out and clean that is going to be the answer (I kind of hope it is as want to use her and the caravan for Bugjam too)barndoor deluxe wrote: ....so whens the next test drive Bee? hows the engine running now...hope your getting to the fun stage of driving it
If only I'd known that when I asked the Q originally. Haynes and I just don't get on that well It's not got an extensive enough index of reference for a novice like me.purplepeter wrote:Page 83 in the Haynes has details of clutch pedal adjustment the 1mm clearance on the pushrod is vital & equates to 3-4mm free play at the pedal
