Engine Builders

Post by s.unsworth » 24th April 2023 - 12:31pm

Do we have any recommended Air Cooled Engine Builders for our 1600 Type 3 Engine please ?

Andy Pearce rebuilt our 1300 Beetle 6 or more years ago. That has been great. Planned to ask Andy to rebuild the Type 3 Engine. Unfortuantely he has since retired.

I think most people rebuild their own
Have you tried contacting your chap to see if he'd like a few extra pennies in his reitirement?
The only person I know of (And would heartily recommend) is Jeff Lawrence, Jeffs vw shack, Bristol, 0117 329 1716 or find Him on Facebook

Unfortunately there is no way I could attempt to remove the Engine and Auto Transmission from the Type 3 Variant. I believe that is the recommended way to remove the Engine before separating from the Transmission. It would have to be someone who could do the whole job.

We have renowned Porsche Engine Builder Mike Bainbridge ( MB Engineering ) living about a mile away from us. He might have done it, at a Price, but Mike has also Retired and given up his workshop.

Unfortunately as Peter said, I rebuild my own. Never had the money to pay someone else so I learned how to do it and never found a need for anyone else to do it. Daz Chandler comes highly recommended by a friend of mine. But it would be a long slog for you.

The last Engines I built were British Leyland A Series ( Morris Minor ), B Series ( Riley 1.5 and MGB ), Ford 1600E. Had to change the Head Gasket on my Lotus Cortina once. Even took the Gearbox out of my 1600E on a Sunday Morning, changed fitted all new Bearings and put it back in.

That was all a very, very long time ago !
