71 FI Fastback re-commission

Post by Bearproof Dave » 24th February 2020 - 9:10pm

Hi there, im new to the forum and new to Type 3 ownership!

I purchased my 1971 fastback a couple years ago but haven't made much of a start on it up until now due to other projects and lots of fishing!

The car has been sat for quite some time and before i get stuck into the bodywork, i want to get the engine running so i can see where i stand with that before its removed for welding work around the engine bay.
the leftover fuel in the system has completely solidified. theres about 1/2" of solid black tar in the bottom of the tank, and the pump is not looking good at all!
heres my plan, any input would be greatly appreciated on the following points-

will try and get the tank clean and poss refurb using the "frost resto's kit"

will be replacing all fuel lines front to back. most pipes seem to be about 7 to 7.5mm. will prob use the Brickwerks stuff

have begun overhauling the pump as per the brilliant guide on here but i dont know whether im going to be able to free up the PRV piston or not. its jammed up pretty good! may have to go down the "Airtex e2000" pump conversion route unless theres any better suggestions for replacement pumps??

ive not checked the pressure regulator yet but Heritage seem to have a few options available if need be

ive removed the injectors and planning the get them cleaned and tested by a specialist. might have the cold start valve check too? can anyone recommend a good source for new injector seals?

im a bit worried about the ECU aswell. ive got serious corrosion issues on all the bodywork surrounding the area where the ECU is housed (a lot of it has gone!). im hoping it hasnt been filling up with water over the last 10 years or so. it doesnt look to be in bad shape but ill guess we'll see.
is it advisable to open them up for inspection or am i likely to cause damage?
whats the sort of availability on used ones and are there many variations across the years?

am i right in thinking that the points, rotor arm, dizzy cap, condenser, plugs and leads are all the same as the carb engines?

sorry for all the questions. i have been doing a fair bit of research and found lots of great info on here so far

I know very little about the FI system. But I can offer some basic expeience advice, though you seem to switched on already.

I used the por 15 tank clean and liner kit, and it was faultless, just take your time doing it and make sure its absolutely dry between phases.
Brickwerks pipe will be up to the job.
If you can, ulrasonicly clean the PRV, it will probably be the best chance of sorting it out.
I dont know if there are varriations over the years. But I think I have an ECU and if it dont, its because I sent it to Dave Hall who may be willing to vend it in your direction should it be needed.
Yes they are the same items as the carb cars to the best of my knowledge.

Thank you for using the forum to its best, its not the most lively place, but its certainly a gold mine of information and Im pleased you are finding what you need!

FI tanks are fairly common
Something sticks in my mind about the screen in the tank causing problems if you try to use por15
(the screen that separates the main tank from the fuel return)

Cheers for the replies fellas!
I’ll keep that in mind for the PRV. I might even see if the injector guys I’m planning on using can take a look at it.
I think I read a thread on here that mentioned that screen plate in the tank so I’ll do a bit more research before I order up the por15.

Ill double check this evening about hte kit size. I ordered the recommended size and it was enough to do two tanks!

Hi Dave, I guess you're talking about RDH 96K, it's a '72 model 1600TE ( VW model years start in August and this was an October '71 car, ISTR). Sorry I've not got round to picking up your P-mail.

Take a look at the club website for a cross-section of the FI fuel tank (http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/fuelsend.php ). It shows the venturi which acts to keep the inner pot full of fuel. If you fill the tank with sealer, it clogs that area up and causes lots of problems. I have a tank here but I'll have to check if it's FI.
There is an excellent description of overhauling the fuel pump on this forum site, in TECHNICAL STUFF>Engine & Transmission

I know some people have used other fuel pumps, but I've no experience of them. I do have an NOS VW exchange FI pump here in my 'stash' if you get stuck. I've heard that pumps can be persuaded to work by giving them a series of electrical 'kicks', preferably after a soaking in fuel to free them up and swell the O-rings. I've probably got various FI spares too that I don't need now.

I hope all goes well with the work.
Dave.

That info is also available on the website http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/fi_pump.php, it just depends if the web or word format is preferred :)

Hi Dave, yep sure am.
Agreed regarding the tank, wont be re-coating the inside after all. Im gonna have one last try at getting this one clean otherwise ill have to find another one. If you have got one that would be great. Would save me a trip to Luton to pick up another one i had my eye on!

I cant seem to find a source for new injector seals yet?

My pump is still not looking good, have followed the guide but just cant get the PRV piston to free up. I think Ill be in touch regarding a few spares.

Currently just doing some reading up on the fuel dampener and its exact function and where to get a replacement as mine is pretty shot.

Cheers Dave, ill be in touch soon

Small injector seals for yours are 311 133 261A. There's a pack of 4 on ebay at £9.95. WERE - they've disappeared since. Item 293263208868 I'll look tomorrow in my FI box in case I have some, as well as whether the spare tank is FI. The bigger locating bushes are 311 133 263, but they only locate the injector in the bakelite 'spectacles', and aren't really seals. I'll check other FI parts - who knows what I'll find! There's certainly one NOS injector as I bought 2 and only needed one to replace a leaking one. Collecting spare bits at VW shows is a hobby of mine.

I dropped the injectors at Tom Day injection (keynsham) for him to test. He’s gonna try and get the small seals for me. The bushes look ok so will prob go again.

I can think of worse hobbies to have! 👍
