Shocks and gaiters

Post by Creationblue » 23rd December 2014 - 4:59pm

Hi all, I need to replace my rear shocks and being a swing axle car there doesn't seem to be many options from the usual suppliers. Are they beetle units?

Also the inner cv gaiters have fallen apart after no time at all! Are there any good ones about? I really hate doing these jobs annually due to Chinese rubber!

Thanks

Yes, the rears are the same as SA beetle.

I have fitted the gaiters from GSF which have seemed to last, but I don't do many miles.

The important thing is to fit them with the split horizontal.
I see a lot of people fit them with the split at the top.
I can see the logic, but the joint won't flex much so it will put a lot strain on the rubber at the bottom.

With the split horizontal its on the neutral axis, so it isn't required to give there and so the stretch is shared between the top and the bottom section - if that makes sense...

Remember to tighten the gaiters with the vehicle on the ground so that it is preloaded properly. That reduces the amount of flexing each way.
