Insurance

Post by Tris. » 10th January 2012 - 9:39am

Who do you guys insure your cars with?
Last year I paid £127 to insure my square fully comp, agreed valuation, BDC, legal expenses etc through Royal sun alliance.
I've got some quotes for the renewal and the cheapest I can find now is £334!!! Last year I had 6 points, now I have a clean licence.

Cant believe how much its gone up by :(

Who do you insure with, and how much is it?

Also is there any policy that is classic car cover but allows you to build up a no claims bonus? As I have a company van, I've never been able to build up a NCB.

Cheers

Hi Tris,

It wasn't for a Type 3, but I had a great quote from Lancaster.
It was less than half what my usual insurer quoted me and I've been with them for 20 years without a claim.

Still no NCB though.

I used Lancaster for many years, but last year changed to Footman James.

For about £5 more (£108) I think I got more mileage, 10k agreed value and europe wide brakedown insurance but they do require you to cofirm start mileage at the begining of the policy.

Yes, I was surprised how few questions Lancaster asked - I'm glad I only paid for 3000 miles! ;) :unibrow:

That would be of no use to me as I rattle up almost a 1000 miles in a month sometimes in my 412!

I'm with FJ with an unlimited mileage policy, agreed valuation and business use for a £200 (near-as-damn-it)! So a little more money but then I use it a lot more but it's still half the price of the Golf Gti

I've just renewed my Beetle with Footman James for £124 (unlimited mileage) after Adrian Flux asked for £201 for similar terms (5k mileage) and benefits. My 412 comes due in May and I'll be moving that to FJ too.

Did mine through Heritage, told them all my mods, bigger engine, twin 40's,lowered,alloy wheels, everything, agreed value too, limited mileage though...ahem,cough,cough,came to£150 even with crappy interior, was funny though, they only give you about 5 slots of mods to fill in,so I rang them as I had more than 5 mods, they were cool about it and said "we wouldn't expect anything else for a Type 3 notch.".......lol

Hi

I insure with Footman James on a Multi car Policy, I have a 67 Fasty, 68 beetle and a 1991 MkII Golf Driver all insured on the same policy for £313.00. This give unlimited Mileage, Agreed Value, SD & P and commuting to and from work and legal cover, could not believe the price, used to be insured with Flux and for two cars it was double the price!!!

All the best

How did they do your valuation?

I've just been quoted by RH and its big saving over footman james.

BUT for the valuation; it has to be by a club or Independent specialist.

I've only ever had to do a self valuation before so have no idea who could do me a valuation?

Anyone have any ideas?

You just need a letter from a local Vw garage or your local club on some headed paper so they know who wrote it. Not sure if this club has a anyone but I know the ssvc club can do valuations at shows.

Have renewed my insurance with Adrian flux. Declared modifications and limited mileage of just 1500 miles and it has cost me £265 fully comp. don't think I have got a very good deal. They first renewed it automatically and had added on breakdown cover, personal injury and legal aid and wanted £370! They couldn't get payment because they had my old debit card details at which point they contacted me and the add-ons came to light. This is how they make money these days.

I have just left Adrian Flux because they were asking too much at my renewal. I'm now with Footman James and I have my Beetle and my 412 on a multi-car classic policy with them with unlimited mileage for about the same as AF were asking for one car!

I'm trying to catch up with myself and get ready to go off again. An independent valuation should be done by examining the vehicle, but we do need to get a club official to check it out.

Since you're in Kent (just noticed!), I wonder if maybe Danny can take a good look at it and report back?

I won't be able to see it until Stanford Hall on 1st July - you really want someone to look at it before then so you can get it insured and on the road.
Dave.

Hi dave

Thanks for the pm.

I'll speak to Danny.

I can insurance in the mean time but will not have the value agreed until the valuation is submitted which means market value only.

Regards
Rob

One of the more important things about owning a car is having an insurance policy to go with it. More importantly, it should be something that could make do with what things you need and want for it.

Like on my other car, it would be important to get to know what the provisions actually include just so you could be assured that what you are getting would include everything that is in the car, or else, you should consider adding the premium for it.

In the UK, it's the law. What's it like in the Philippines?

They used to import VW Type 3s there - I believe there is still a large stock of parts for them somewhere in Manila.
Dave.
