When, what, who and how?
So, what was your first VW? When did you buy it? How old were you and how much was it?
Mine was a 72 orange fastback, bought in 1989 when I was 17 for £900.

Re: When, what, who and how?
My first one was BKB 572K - a Brilliant Orange '72 Squareback. I bought it in 1990 from a guy in Warrington and used it as my daily for 2 years. During that time I restored a house and also used the Square as a skip and builder's van. It never, ever let me down
I sold it in '92 and only a couple of weeks ago I found it again... it's had a lot of work done and been resprayed a different colour but it's still alive

Re: When, what, who and how?
I rather foolishly jumped into the deep end with my 412 being first VW!
However it is my wifes fault as she had a 1302s as her first car in the late 80s (before I met her) and loved it but had to let it go due to expecting her first and the car falling apart due to friends of her 'ex' who would give it dodgy MoTs when it really needed a shed load of welding to keep it safe.
A few years ago she had a Vauxhal Nova that was a great little run araound but it was starting to become unreliable so I bought her her current Beetle from a local garage without really knowing what I was letting myself in for...now I'm hooked

A red 1968 1200 beetle, in 1992 chipped in with some college friends paid £200 if memory serves me right, it died one day and we just abandoned it in the college car park, it was still there when I left two years later

I bought a 1600 1303s 1973 (NEU 146L) when I was 17 in 1988 for the scary amount of 1600 quid. It was my first car and I loved it. I had it for 12 years - think it's died now

Re: When, what, who and how?
all started for me December 25 1990...2 months before my 17th ...the house over the road had a 71 1300 for sale, looked at it but i just didnt have enough saved to buy it .(think it was £1100)..few weeks later it was gone...tried to forget about it but i had already said to my mum im going to get a orange one like it just as soon as i could afford......... Fast forward 3 months to christmas day the very same bright orange beetle was outside with tinsel all over it!.......brings a lump in my throught just thinking about it! I ended up spending my savings on insurance and running repairs!
Had the car about 5 years but sold it when i brought my 1st house........Herbie goes To Montecarlo has a lot to answer for ..All these years later and the VW illness has not got anybetter
3 type 3s
3 type 4s
2 beetles
2 type 2s
and a couple of golfs/bora/passat later im still just the same as i was when the 1st Hebie film came out Im 37 now and im sure my mum thought i would of "outgrown" VWs by now
Sorry for waffling on!

Re: When, what, who and how?
Blue 1973 1200 Beetle in 1987 just a few weeks after I passed my test aged 17. I think it was £700. Registration AFM 913L, I wonder what happened to it. I've never been able to shake the VW curse since and am still saddled with a Beetle, a Bay, and a Variant....Damn!

Re: When, what, who and how?
Great thread!
Mine was an Elm Green 71 1300 beetle in 1985 - PRA 787K, where are you now?
It was my first car, I was 19 and I paid £475 if I remember.
I cal looked it after I'd seen the Colin Burnham feature in Street Machine magazine (still have those mags!), and I sold it in 1990 once I'd discovered Type 3's!

Mine was a 1962 RHD Canterbury Pit split screen
Bought whilst I was at collage in 1988 I think.

Sold it in about 2004 before moving to Cornwall.
