Early RHD Squarebacks??

Post by Rich Oakley » 1st August 2007 - 3:56pm

There don't seem to be many 'early' (ie: pre-1964) RHD Squarebacks around. Are there any left in the UK??

Ive not seen that many over the years, there seems to be a few LHD Imported ones popping up every now and again,

There was a chap (cant think of his name at the mo) who had a nice white '64 1500 'S, lives/d over Bath way, was for sale a while ago.

Do you know who I mean Mr Editor? he came with us to the Type 3 show nr Amsterdam in '97.

Danny.

I vaguely remember that one. A bit too 'late' for my liking though
There's Rich Whitlock's 63 Aussie imported one, but I really can't think of any others!!

There was a Sea blue/Pearl white Notch for sale about a year ago - I think that was RHD.

I'm racking my brain to remember the white one in Amsterdam - was it Kerry, from Wilts Air-Cooled, maybe?

Larry and Lin would probably remember - they know him better than me.

I dont think that was him, I'll have to look him up in one of the old club yearbooks (remember them? )

I should be purchasing a scanner soon, first Job will be to scan all the early Squareback pics I have, will put them on here for Rich and probably others to drool over!!

Yearbooks - oh yes, did my first one in 1986 I think - is it time to reprint it, do you think? I've run out of ideas now. ;)
That was done on a Sinclair QL computer with twin microdrives - £299 including thermal printer, I think.

Have you got your scanner yet Danny???! ;) Really looking forward to seeing the early RHD Sqback pics. A good friend of mine has just found one that I'm hoping to purchase- early '63, original owner with 30,000 miles on the clock.

JDL 305F belongs to me its actually a 1966 uk rhd square but the orignal owners ordered it to be delivered in south africa where the husbund was stationed at the time .They ordered it from a isle of white dealer when they came back for family reasons but had it deliverd to his work address then they returned in 1968 when he retired from service so the car is a uk spec rhd 66 model. Its sitting in my garage nice and snug under its cover waiting for more summer weather
Cheers

i broke up an early rhd square (63 or 64) some years ago - i got it from rich grant (he had a pink square pictured in one of the earliest issues of volksworld and has ben into type 3s for years). i used the front clip as a donor for the old white fastback - the rest of it was well-beyond saving... honestly! i'll dig out some pics when i get a mo (i'm 99% sure it was an 'n', but the pics will confirm this). the cool thing about it was that it was almost certainly factory painted dark green with a black roof... which i think was quite an unusual combo?
