Re: Throttle cable
The one I fitted was a universal one and the cable has snapped at the pedal end right where the nipple and pedal join, I’ve noticed that some sites are advertising specifically RHD cables my car is LHD so I’m wondering if the cable run is a bit arduous at the pedal putting undue stress on the solder...

Throttle cable
Can anyone suggest a supplier for a good quality throttle cable, I purchased one from GSF about 2 years ago and it snapped on me at the weekend, I was hoping for a bit longer than 2 years! Does anyone know if the Heritage one is good quality?

Re: Cam wear
Yes that's exactly what I'm going to do , I need to get a pertractor on the crank pulley and a DTI on a push rod so that I can measure valve lift versus crank angle.Push rod displacement will tell me if the cam is worn and crank angle will show if the timing is out.

Re: Cam wear
I thought as much, seems that there are 50 teeth on the cam gear so that means if its only 1 tooth out it is 7.2° wrong, just need to figure out if I can actually do the checks with the engine in the car!

Re: Cam wear
Sorry for hijacking your thread, but I have had my car on a dyno/rolling road to confirm that as a result of running much more ignition timing than the manual says I am not running to lean at the high end of the rev range and also not pinking, which luckily I'm not. However when I quizzed the guy at...

Re: Full flow oil system
Hi Jmarkha1, thanks for your reply, yes some pictures would be very helpful and is that oil pump readily available at most of the usual air cooled vw stockists or is it a specialist item?
Thanks Doug.

Re: Full flow oil system
Just re-visiting this as i am planning on a bit of a road trip around Europe next year and thought the extra oil capacity and better filtration would help with reliability/cooling. I found these oil pump covers are they low enough profile to go in behind the fan cowling without a mod do you think Br...

Re: Starter motor
Thanks guys, I was already half way through a strip, clean and reassemble when your message came through 937Carrera and it was filthy. I refitted it last night and it works fine the proof in the pudding will be when I try to do a hot restart- fingers crossed.
Thanks again everyone for your help, Doug.

Re: Starter motor
Quick update on the starter fault, the bush in the bell housing looks good so i tested the starter on the bench and it is very lazy so I'm thinking that maybe its had its day, it does look like the original one, so the next question is where would buy a new one from ? The ones from Heritage don't ha...

Starter motor
Hi, my '71 type 3 FI has developed a non starting issue when its hot, in that the starter does nothing until its given a "light tap" after which it will work again, is there anything in particular I need to be paying attention to before i go down the route of replacing the starter? Somebody mentione...

Type3 FI Distributor
Hi, I have been fortunate enough to borrow a type 4 FI distributor to try and help diagnose a fault on my type 3 notch FI but on closer inspection they are not the same, the notch in the body for finding no1 cylinder is about 180 degrees out and the relationship between the drive and the rotor arm i...

Re: Instrument Panel Illuminations
Yes all of the instruments have lamps in them and they can be changed, they should've just be a bayonet style fitment and the lamp holder comes out of the instrument revealing the bulb. I have changed mine but the only one that got any brighter was the speedo so mine may require some kind of clean i...

Re: Late FI Notchback running problems
Hi everyone, Just revisiting the running issues with my FI notch, over the winter i had the throttle switch refurbished in an attempt to cure the slow engine speed, driving in traffic, very light throttle opening "jolting" almost like a misfire. Initially I was confident the refurb had cured the iss...

Re: Removing lateral play in upper Trailing arms
Thanks Peter I used this link and the information that Dave has put in this thread is much clearer than my Haynes manual, the play that was in my front beam that has made it onto the advisory's list of the MOT is now sorted! Again thanks to everyone on the forum for their posts!

Re: Bump Steer
Bump steer is geometry related not a symptom of worn out parts, there is a comprehensive tutorial in Volksworld from June this year I think showing how to compensate for bump steer as a result of lowering your car.

Re: Front tires?
Hi, I have a 2 spline drop on the front of mine and when i bought the car i fitted smart car front tyres (145/65x15) to some BRM replicas that had a ET15 (15 mm offset) and i was happy with the look which was all fine when i was on my own but as soon as the car was 4 up the front beam mounts crashed...

Fuel pressure is 28psi but I have to admit its been a while since I've changed the oil in the air cleaner, it doesn't look particularly dirty!

Re: Late FI Notchback running problems
Yes they're all good, I had another issue a little while ago where it wouldn't start when it was hot and after further investigation found no valve clearance on cyl number 3 and tight clearances on number 2, reset them all and compression tested, 130psi on all 4 and hot start issue all sorted.

Re: Late FI Notchback running problems
Just a quick update on the my notch, it's running well now ,not perfect, but i think I'll have to live with it. After visiting the garage to re- check the emissions, CO 3% but HC still up at 3000ppm, I think I may try a plug change in an attempt to clean up the HC's but for the most part I'm going t...

Re: Late FI Notchback running problems
Had another play last night, re-visited everything again and didn't find anything, temp sensor 1 (CHT) tested good when cold and hot so I have to believe its working correctly, did find an air leak on the pipe to the pressure sensor, so sorted that and the idle is much better now, I do admit I did h...
