Re: Type 4 bushes

I'll give them a call. I just want dimensions or unused examples so I can see about getting some urethane ones made to order.

Re: my early 411

Good luck with the restoration. Very glad this car will be saved. Are you going factory spec or some modification? Folk on here always helpful and may even be able to provide some parts if you need. Keep us posted on your progress.

Type 4 fuel lines around the fuel pump

Can anyone refer me to a good picture(s) of what the fuel lines from the fuel tank to the tunnel should look like on a type 4? I changed the fuel filter from a type 1 type to the square FI type yesterday and it's like a bowl of spaghetti under there with lines zip-tied together to prevent fouling th...

Type 4 bushes

Any know if any of the bushes on the front suspension/steering of a 412 are common with any other models? Thank you.

Search https://oldtimer.tips (sorry, not sure how to create a link). Loads about D-jetronic and K-jetronic systems.

Re: MAP sensors

After some interweb searching I found lots of info on the old timers website which gives make and models for the sensors. There's also a very useful video which shows how to test the sensor which I did. Turns out all the sensors are good. I switched one for the one on my car then tested it and found...

MAP sensors

I pulled three MAP sensors out of my parts store on Sunday. I always supposed there was only one type but on inspection they all have different part numbers: vw 022 906 051, 022 906 051 E and 311 906 051 C (the Bosch numbers are 0 280 100 003, 0 280 100 049 and 0 280 100 007 respectively). One is cl...

Brake drums

Saft question perhaps but are the little locating screws for the rear brake drums on a type 4 the same on other types? Changed the wheel on my 412 today as got a puncture and found the screws are missing. Thanks.

Re: Rain getting in!

The air box saga continues. I've put the first coat of paint on today. It's not easy to do - scratched wrist trying to get into the space and can't see anything. All done by feel and camera on the phone to view my work. First coat is white and has gone on okay with plenty of paint in the bottom of t...

Re: Rain getting in!

I finally got round to taking out the fan to investigate the leak. What a fiddly job. The access is awful, sore back after lying across the sill to get under the dash. Finally got everything out, debris and all. The drain wasn't blocked. Someone has put sealant on the seam before so it's an historic...

412 front shocks

During recent investigations into the source of a petrol aroma I had cause to look under the front of the car and noticed a very damp nearside shock absorber, damp all the way from the top, so I'm guessing the shock seal has given up. I have some old Boge shocks labelled as being for a 411 with part...

Re: Ultrasonic fuel injector cleaning

That review... Country Life magazine! I think I found the source of the transient petrol smell - a leaking petrol can cap. Yes, I carry five litres of fuel in the boot just in case my not so reliable fuel gauge should tell me a little lie. The plastic cap had split and the rubber seal degraded so I ...

Re: Ultrasonic fuel injector cleaning

So I pulled the plugs just to have a look. They were an even tan colour on the electrodes but were coked around ceramic/screwthreads. I cleaned them up and adjusted the gaps as they were all slightly bigger than the should be. Having run the car a for a few days it does smell better and the fuel gau...

Re: Ultrasonic fuel injector cleaning

It's never really been any better than 16-17 mpg, even when it doesn't smell of petrol. It is a daily driver around town during rush hour and does do better on longer runs but even so I'd hoped it'd do 25 mpg. It accelerates and chugs along quite happily and doesn't run rough or idle rough, it just ...

Re: Ultrasonic fuel injector cleaning

That's great information. I have a box of old injectors so will certainly give Bob a call and see if he can tell me which are good and which are bad. My car has developed a petrol waft in the cabin. It's transient but there. I've been under the car, at the engine end, in the boot at the front and ar...

Ultrasonic fuel injector cleaning

I've been following Rob's tales of woe on 'going electric??' and although (apologetically) I have nothing more to offer I did notice with some interest that fuel injectors can be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath. Does anyone know how this is done in a practical sense? How much of the injector is subjec...

Re: Rain getting in!

Thank JSR-69. I've not had the chance to investigate the ins and outs of getting to the drain holes yet but if it's not to exhaustive I might have a fighting chance of a couple of hours at the weekend. I'm pretty sure that's what it'll be as the water in is proportional to the rain coming down! Wher...

Re: Rain getting in!

Well, I taped up the fresh air grille on the scuttle panel and having had some heavy rain it is still dry inside so at least I know where it is getting in. Just need to determine why now!

Re: Rain getting in!

I removed the carpet the day it happened to try to trace the leak. The metalwork is remarkably sound (I was pleasantly surprised!) but it was certainly where it was getting in. I inspected under the dash but could find no sign of water, droplets, dampness or otherwise. It only leaks under heavy rain...

Rain getting in!

It's rained hard here today and turned the passenger footwell in my 412 into a mini lake. There was damp coming down through the carpet from the fresh air blower although I couldn't see any drips from the blower unit there were droplets of water suggesting a trickle (torrent!) from that area under t...

Daft suggestion perhaps but have you got some lose tinware rattling about? Anything lose and metal will rattle about in time with the engine revs.
