Re: black smoke!

are the floats working? if they arent then the needle will be open all the time, so it will just flood the engine will fuel. When was it last serviced? got a good spark, timing set correctly? has it stood for a while? take it for a short run to warm it up and see if its clears

Re: Setting timing 009

Yep, much better with the original vacuum dissy. The 009 flat spot is caused by a lack of advance during acceleration. It depends what pulley you have fitted. But usually the last mark is TDC. If you have two further marks clockwise from there. 7.5BTDC and 10BTDC. But it'll depend on your engine cod...

Re: Windscreen washer on 68 fastback - how does it work.

Marko did a rather nice job though. Using the original switch but making it electrical internally. The pressure system always worked, it was just the fun of a perished hose allowing it to blow fluid all over the carpet or the spare tyre being flat just when you needed it that encouraged most folks t...

If i recall. Steering wheel off, the undo the top column mounting bolts under the dash and unclamp the stalks from the coloumn and slide them off. This give you room to get at the back of the switch and the side, where threes a grubscrew. I think (its been a while). They reverse to rebuild in true h...

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

I still like the steel idea. I've no idea why as its never seen and hard to get at to reseal. Ive also thought about a complete redesign. As im not sure why VW did things they way they did. Seems to me the air box "collector" could have been made bigger to seal against the vents in the scuttle to el...

After speaking to one of the fabricators in the hangar today. His first suggestions was a/c grade fibreglass. It was very tempting! Moler who occasionally comes on here has two of the shrink/stretches from frosts to avoid the jaw swapping. There is also one at work, so one evening when its raining I...

After a few minutes of searching I grew bored. The missus was out for the evening, it was glorious 25c+ heat, the car was sat in the carport so I thought sod it, I’ll have a crack. I stripped the rest of the seats and carpeting. Got my head right up there and had a good feel/look around and I couldn...

You have 0.8mm with no shims in? With a target of 0.07-0.13mm (im now less convinced by the 0.15mm argument, i think is more for an engine in service rather than a building specification.) Obviously we want to aim as low as we can. The available shims are 0.24, 0.26, 0.28, 0.3, 0.32, 0.34, 0.36. Any...
