Re: Ignition Cutting Out

Sounds like youre on to something, because at idle the dynamo doesnt provide enough volts to charge the battery, and thus the regulator isnt doing anything.

Re: Alternator options

As long as the loom wasnt butchered, under the rear seat you would be able to add the regulator back in. Get a Bosch solid state one. There is a straight swap dynamo/alternator but its £500. https://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/p/vw-type-3 If youre running standard electrics, the dynamo is fine. I...

Try lubricating the mechanism first. Some wd40 and then operate the level a few times. Often the catch will jam.

Glad to hear that! Thought you had spotted a dead giveaway for them being fakes. Do feel I made a mistake with the hex bar and should have got the bell crank linkage but here we are, it’ll get swapped out one day :D You are exactly right, hex bar is tosh, to much play and difficult to balance, but ...

Re: Engine

With those carbs, you're best taking them apart. They are weber 34ict copy's. And they are supplied with jets and emulsion tubes for a Bedford van. So you'll find it doesn't run quite right no matter what you do. I'll look up thr right stuff later in my notes. My guess is you can't keep that block, ...

Looks like you don't have the mounting bar on it now.

Is that the fastback that was on ebay in Scotland for some time? I recognise those air filters. When you say northern half of the UK, where are you?

So it would be a case of removing the mounting bar and just going with the earlier rear mount? From photos i see the later models still have the rear mount attached to the fan shroud but no fixed to the donut, is this right?

Re: 71 Type 3 Fastback, 2 issues

First thing. Run through the basics. Adjust the tappets, then check the timing dynamically. Then check the carbs, are the wires that feed the chokes and cut off valves ok? With the ignition on, remove a wire from the cut off, then touch it to the terminal, is there solid audible click? The same on t...

Dynamo Finish

Does anyone know how the 12V dynamos were finished? I assume the bearing carriers at the ends were just bare aluminum. But the body is steel, was is zinc or cadmium plated? or painted? any photos or knowledge would be much appreciated. Original sales brochures might help
