Re: 412 headlights

Ouch, an update is missing so here's one after one summer and early autumn: High beams are excellent, no problem at all in seeing, even in rain. Low beams provide a lot of light but it's too near, not very useful on dark road outside of town. I also know the reason for this: The reference number for...

Re: Still going strong and correct engine also found

I'm still looking for 93mm domed pistons, but those seem to be totally N/A everywhere, so I may have to settle with 96mm flat top piston set from AA. Anyway, some progress: I had engine tinware sandblasted and painted and the difference is well worth the money: http://kharon.suomiforum.com/www/412/m...

Re: Still going strong and correct engine also found

Not much progress in winter as I didn't find a garage for the job, but now it's summer again and we can do stuff outside (actually in trunk, as you can see), nice. Currently +12C (53F), that's not much, but we had two weeks about +23C (73F), that was nice. Disassembly has progressed almost to the bl...

Re: TYPE 4 body panels

Here in North (means Finland in this case) there are plenty of Volvo parts available as 740 was a fairly common car and manufactured just across the border, in Sweden. Outer sill plates 55euros/piece at local parts shop (motonet.fi, parts 90-40011 and 90-40012). No idea if they deliver outside of Fi...

Re: Still going strong and correct engine also found

New old engine hauled to home and it looks quite horrible but it has at least correct carburetors for an AN-engine. This is good as those aren't easy to find. All the rubber parts are beyond salvable but those should be generic type4 parts. Also some pics: http://kharon.suomiforum.com/www/412/mosa/ ...

Re: Still going strong and correct engine also found

No, I didn't. But while I'm here I'll tell you that 412 is now in winter storage in a semi-heated garage (electric heater is on but it's only about 500 watts, won't be able to keep it warm if there's -20C below. But it keeps the garage dry and that's the point). Only about 40 miles away, not too far...

Re: A new 412 owner

Dave: Sumatra green is a bit lighter green. From a paint sample it's very hard to see any difference, but when you have both on car, side by side, it's different even for an amateur like me. Wireless: The section of inner fender around VIN-plate and colour code was rusted away and was replaced by ne...

Re: Type 4 Parts book

Unfortunately it's relatively old one, from August 1971. Last paper book, perhaps? (After that, only microfiches available.)

Very useful for most parts as it is, but for a late model, like mine(1974), it doesn't offer much help for newer parts.

Still going strong and correct engine also found

About an year ago I bought my 412 with description 'inspected and probably will take you home' ( 300 miles). Well, I fetched it in June, drove it home and it has had basically no major problems this summer, I'm quite happy with that. Haven't counted the kilometers, but few thousands isn't far. Bigge...

Re: Possible fuel leak

We've 95E10 and 98E5, respectively 10% and 5% ethanol, 95E10 being the cheapest. We've also Shell Power with no ethanol, but it's almost 15 cents per liter more expensive than either of the ordinary variants. I've used that for winter storage and such where it pays to have no ethanol and cost is jus...

Re: Possible fuel leak

I'm afraid modern fuel with ethanol is killing the hoses.

Same thing has happened so far to two of my other VWs: Fuel hose replacement to modern materials helps.

Re: A new 412 owner

Old steering column was a bit rusty so I swapped whole column from spare part stash. I still had to swap steering lock (to keep the key) but not too hard when you have whole column out of the car. Got rid of the button and have start from the key like it should. Nice. I also enforced (as the one I h...

Re: 412 headlights

Eventually got new lights with parking lights and did a test view, with one side with old light and the other with new. Difference is significant (but I couldn't photograph it, sorry), so swapping the old ones out made sense. So now I've 4 new 5 3/4" Hellas and relays & heavy wiring for all of them:...

Re: 412 headlights

It was a grounding problem: Ground wire had almost 30 ohms resistance between wire end and actual ground. New, heavy gauge wire to the body and no problems. One possible reason why the old lights were so dim. Anyway, I took some pics with new setup on passenger side and old in driver side. Car not r...

Re: 412 headlights

It's getting dark here in North (currently it's pitch black and it's just midnight) and I wasn't happy at all with the stock (old) lights, for many reasons. 1) Only 2 bulbs burning at any time. 2) Whole current to feed them goes through the old fuses, dimmer relay and switch, resulting a huge voltag...

Re: A new 412 owner

Idler arm bushing swapped and noisy clunks from front right vanished. Progress. Still wobbling but at least it's silent. Wheel orientation check in program (toe-in, caster & camber). Steering lock switch swap from a spare steering column next as the starter switch is broken and replaced with a butto...

Re: A new 412 owner

Carpet installed, looks good but it is smaller than I thought (and side carpets respectively bigger). http://kharon.suomiforum.com/www/412/IMG_3625.jpg I also got help from friends with swapping the idler arm bushing. Hopefully that and a NOS (hopefully still working) steering damper (I got with the...

Re: A new 412 owner

New belt installed, nothing major except the alternator upper bolt lost its nut as I loosened it a bit too much. We'll see, I needed big tools to turn the alternator at all, so it might hold with just lower nut tightened. Carpet is still drying, can't install yet. Now sauna and some dark Kozel, well...

Re: A new 412 owner

Hello people! I had some time during the week so I used cleaning wax and machine for two rounds on paint and ordinary wax one round and now the car looks much better. Also got the floor carpet from US (front floor, no wheel wells or rear part), it looks and feels very good. It has some mouse damage ...

Re: A new 412 owner

You might find this link to a German brochure for the 1974 model year useful http://www.volkswagen-classic.de/documents/10156/1692919/03_412+Limo+u.+Variant+01.08.1973.pdf Looks like Tropical Green is the right colour, and the interior could have been black, bamboo or mocca originally. Nice to see ...

Re: A new 412 owner

I When I lived in Sweden it used to get dark (well nearly) at 23:30, you're around 10 degrees further east, so make that 00:10, but Finland is another hour ahead so it should be dark at around 23:10. It is still quite bright so I'll guess 22:30. Ever since I lived in Sweden I don't think we have la...

Re: 412 project :) where do i get the parts??

The short answer: You don't. The long answer: As VW provides (almost) nothing and aftermarket parts basically doesn't exist, you either restore the existing parts or swap/buy them from other owners. That's why most 4xx-owners have several spare parts cars. One person I know, has 3 whole cars (simila...

Re: A new 412 owner

Thanks for the pics. I got the badge which looks the same as in the first picture but there's at least two versions of that too: One with thin stud and one with thick studs. Also it's too long for the holes in the hood. But the one in the latter picture might be correct, at least it looks smaller. (...
