My post above was a response to your very similar, almost identical post you just made... except for the additional information on the behaviour which is different to what I expected
Your call on the diagnostic route to take, others may have additional suggestions

Re: Ignition Cutting Out
Oh dear, sorry to hear that. Looking back on this post Just to clarify, although I thought I had been very specific, when the Ignition Cut Out the Generator and Oil Pressure Warning Lights did not come on. The Indicators did not work. Steve U If the car had stalled, the generator & oil pressure ligh...

She looks very tidy.... (referring to the car)
It's been a while, but they do look like the best pictures I've seen. Nice chromework.

Sounds like you had a good time with friends, plus some useful parts acquisition.

Re: Furious Fastback
You'll need an adaptor to make that fit the carbs nicely I had a neighbour who enjoyed placing a road cone outside my garage, so i took a hacksaw to her cone, the top of which makes the perfect adaptor Obviously, I'm a law abiding citizen, but you should be able to get the ton between keynsham wait...

Re: Dying in the Heat
Have a look here: https://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=15204&start=25 Seems like it could be similar heat soak issues, do you have the insulating spacers in place? If the engine is running hot, then I suggest you check all the cooling for leaks, or full movement of the thermo...

Re: Furious Fastback
You know what there's a good description of type 3 history here
https://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/t3hist.php
Or click on the logo / old site link at the top of the forum
Broady, what do you think about the ignition timing being out to the pulley - camshafts assembled out of position ?

Re: 72 fastback indicator problem
Can you do a better repair ?
Cut the contact section off & use epoxy / chemical metal / plastic to form the deeper socket to which the contact section can be reattached

Not my area of expertise, but it looks like this might not be the right distributer for your car / carbs

Re: 72 fastback indicator problem
My memory tells me that indicators should be 21W, same as brake lights.
I have never come across a classic car that used different physical sized bulbs, is there something unusual about the bulb holders or the lenses ?

Re: Furious Fastback
I have read many times that you should not replace an original condenser with a new one
Quite why we cannot make new ones as good as 50 years ago is a mystery to me
Fingers crossed for you

Re: Furious Fastback
I agree with your maths, so see how it goes.
Your difficulty with starting when hot sounds like it could be heat soak / evaporation of fuel, or, is it flooding from being rich, so look at the chokes.
I'm more type 4, so Peter / Broady have more knowledge on the type 3 foibles

Re: Furious Fastback
Hmmm... (written prior to Peter's response) What's the diameter of the pulley, use this to confirm the 2" = 30 degrees measurement, it is a data point to validate Accepting that you measurements are correct, and this seems to be the case, then I would be considering if the engine has been rebuilt at...

Have a wander around these threads https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=265340 https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=614453 I did a rough count of the ridges that were visible in the photo... which should cover 180 degrees. Re: Brake Master Cylinder
I don't know what the access is like, but I would have thought you have a couple of options to deal with the clevis pin: As you suggest, use a Demel or similar to grind off the weld Drill lengthways through the clevis pin, proably using a 90 degree drill drive adapter. I suggest you acquire some cob...

A failing consensor would lead to a non running engine (no spark across the points), at which point the alternator . oil pressure lights would come on

Re: Ignition Cutting Out
The other possibility is connection onto the consensor & points
I remember doing a points change on a Commer van many moons ago, and it wouldn't start. Turns out that in the replacement I had managed to provide a short to earth, so no spark. Took me hours to find out what I had done

Re: Ignition Cutting Out
I'm rusty on this stuff, but where are the switch contacts. Can you get to them to see if they are worn or dirty, maybe use some contact cleaner. The other though is that the physical part of the switch is not staying in position and is vibrating to the "off position"

Oh dear, you seem to be having some mechanical challenges, what did you do to the 944, they're usually quite robust ?
