Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

Good to see the rapid progress & identification of causes for the issues

What's the availability of bearings like. I don't know for the type 3, but i'm sure that a few years ago the under/oversize for one of the boxer engines became almost unobtanium.... probably T25 ?

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

Ah fair point. What's your experience with DOT5, I have heard mixed reports. My own experience with silicone based fluid was with Castrol SRF about 30 years ago. It was supposed to solve boiling issues, but I found I had to bleed the rear brakes after every session.... on a 924 with drum brakesm so ...

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback

Some niggly bits out of the way there, no doubt made easier because everything came undone. Interesting use of brake cleaner as hydraulic oil replacement, was that to remove any residual colour /tarnishing from the pipes? My bleeder is actually a suction bleeder. It works, but I'm never that confide...

I'm a bit rusty on this stuff, but have you seen this part of the website (click on the logo) ?

https://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/type4/t4chengnos.php

I suspect the key difference will be compression ratio via piston design.with associated fuelling changes.

Re: parts from other cars that will fit the 412 variant

Off the top of my head, I'm not aware of any other cars that share those parts, as you probably know, there will be common parts with the 914

Still available, nobody want them for free? Shame to bin them.
It is, looks like there's some 4 door rear cards in there as well as estate over wheel sections

I don't need any, & I'm not close enough to you to collect them. Hopefully someone will spot them over the weekend, and not on Tuesday

The MOT exemption started in May 2018, so there's a 16 year period when one was necessary

Is this the right colour ?

Re: Looking for 412 - ODH 315M

I just looked on the DVLA website It is at least still there, on SORN, bur with no MOT records, which means that it probably hasn't been on the road since 2005. I assume it's a 412 LE variant, not listed at tat detail though. The last change of keeper is November 2002, which must be when your friend...

Looks like Jane took a bit of a hit on directors loan

In terms of parts numbers, I have fired up an old XP laptop which has ETKA on it including type 3 and 4. I will need to reinstall on another laptop & may be able to provide some more help then

Re: Ignition Cutting Out

For diagnostic purposes that should be useful, but I would be tempted to put a switch in line, which would allow easy switching off of the engine, but why not run direct to the battery ?

That will test the whole of the circuit to the coil, before narrowing down further.

Re: please verify date etc for DVLA

Take a look here https://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/type4/t4chengnos.php Engine number indicates a construction date in June/July 1973, 412 variant VIN would align with this if the first characters were 4632: 46 - Variant 3 - 1973 model year 2 - initial digit for all 1970's cars, by deduction I'll n...

Give us a clue as to what you think it is... type 3 or 4 & approx year

I'm guessing a type 4 variant, but the VIN number doesn't seem to match up, can you check?

You'll need an adaptor to make that fit the carbs nicely I had a neighbour who enjoyed placing a road cone outside my garage, so i took a hacksaw to her cone, the top of which makes the perfect adaptor Obviously, I'm a law abiding citizen, but you should be able to get the ton between keynsham wait...
