Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

Everyone, Its been a while since my last update so here goes, Peter thanks for the offer of a twin carb set up but on reflection I decided to opt for keeping it original so ordered a MAP sensor from Canada off of the samba.com, it arrived and is in good working order- big relief! That got fitted and...

Re: Type 3 FI fuel pump options?

George, I use one of these mainly because I had access to some for free, they fit in the original pump holder bracket but you do need some adapter fittings to get to 8mm ID hose that can be quite expensive! Also it is a bit noisy as its designed to be submerged in fuel. https://www.autodoc.co.uk/bos...

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

My fear is, as I've said previously, this is just one of potentially many 50 year old components to fail so I'm not going to fit a used part as it is likely to be the same or fail very shortly, so by the time I've opted for the NOS part plus postage I'm very close to having spent what I need to cove...

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

Good morning Broady, Thanks but this is the wrong part, I think this is for raising the rpm on an automatic car when drive is selected! Dave has also found some bits on the samba I'm just a bit nervous buying something from the states only to find what is actually posted turns out not to be NOS or e...

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

I don't think it can be repaired if the secondary coil is open circuit, Peter has offered me a "carb set up" but I have to admit to not actually asking if he had a sensor!
I also haven't asked Dave perhaps I should!

Re: Ignition fault or vacuum?

Wow guys seems like you've covered quite a lot of ground since the last time I looked, I've never heard of the "intruding inductive" issue before sounds plausible though, hope the investigation keeps turning up valid causes of faults. Good luck, I given up with my Type 3 and am ditching the FI in fa...

Unfortunately looks like you are going to have to do some in depth component tests to try and diagnose the cause of the hunting!

Re: Ignition fault or vacuum?

Rob, Regards the temp sensors/thermal time switches, I'm not too familiar with Type 4 set up but the Type 3 uses 2, one for measuring temp at the cylinder head above no 4, if it is disconnected the engine wont run its kind of a failsafe as long as it has an out put that is too hot the engine will ru...

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

Yes that's what I thought and why I've asked if anyone on here has one for sale. I have taken it apart as far as I can even de-soldered the coil wires from the back of the multiplug and tested the pair of coils on their own, the fault is definitely inside the coil pack!

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

Wow! Just had a look at those two links and there is some pretty in depth stuff in there! I'm certainly not about to invest in some of the diagnostic kit mentioned in the links, I just need to get to a point where I've got a reasonably reliable classic car that I'm not afraid to drive for fear of 50...

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

Good morning all, Yes I have I pretty comprehensive list of tests for all components and the harness and the test between terminals 8 and 10 on the pressure sensor should read 350ohms but its open circuit on mine, weather I test at the harness plug or at the sensor. I don't have another one to try a...

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

Hi Peter, Sorry my question was a bit ambiguous, I meant more along the lines of what type and size carbs work the best? What's a dizzy balance pipe is it something that allows a vacuum to be taken from both carbs for the advance mechanism and can I not just keep using my electric fuel pump with a p...

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

Sorry guys, Forgot to mention that in order to get the fuel pump to run I've supplied the relay with a permanent ground so it runs all the time the ignition is on, not ideal but it works for now until I either fit a "watchdog relay" or find the cause of the grounding issue through the ECU. Regarding...

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

Good afternoon everyone, So as I've been told to stay at home by my employer I've decided to work on the Notch some more. Since the last time I posted I've managed to torque check the right hand bank cylinder head fixings and get the engine all back together. However it runs worse than ever, huge mi...

Re: 1971 FI notch won’t run

I’ve tried the temporary earth and it works - problem with that is all the time the ignition is on the fuel pump is running as opposed to the initial prime, then off and starts running again during cranking/engine running as per vw’s intention!

1971 FI notch won’t run

Hi everyone, the reason it won’t run is because the fuel pump won’t prime, I’ve checked the relay and it has no power on the pump feed terminal. The relay has its 12v permanent supply as per wiring diagram and the switching side has an ignition feed it it just doesn’t ground. I think the ground is c...

Re: Loose cylinder headbolts?

It was and it got re-torqued too! I’m not even sure if this is the cause of my rough running but one thing at a time so as not to confuse what may have fixed it in the end! I removed the ignition coil to improve access and noticed it had begun to show signs of leaking some of its oil, so if the head...

Re: Loose cylinder headbolts?

I managed to do the left hand head at the weekend, that was all I had time for, it requires lots of components to be removed in order to get access to the upper four head nuts! Of the eight four were lower than the specified torque hopefully I’ll get chance to do the right hand bank next weekend!

Ok, good to know, hopefully i'll get chance to have a look at the weekend!
Hopefully if they are loose i haven't done any long term damage running the engine with loose heads, as last time that I used it I struggled to reach 70 mph in it!

Re: Loose cylinder headbolts?

Aaron, did you manage to remove the tin ware with the engine fitted? What car do you have mines a FI notchback not sure if different variants lend themselves to easier tin removal or not? Did you have any symptoms or was it just a routine check?

Thanks Doug.

Loose cylinder headbolts?

Good evening everyone, I'm looking for some advice regarding the above subject. My car has some symptoms of loose cylinder heads and is running like a bag of spanners, oil like deposits on top of the pushrod tubes, occasionally drops onto 3 cylinders and lack of power! My question is should I check ...
